Setting Up a Galera Cluster on Amazon AWS EC2

Through Amazon Web Services (AWS), you can create virtual servers (i.e., instances). You can install database and Galera software on them. In this article, we’ll create three nodes, the minimum recommended for a healthy cluster, and configure them to use Galera Cluster.

Incidentally, there is a more detailed version of this article in the Tutorial section of our Library.

Assumptions & Preparation

We’re assuming you have an AWS account and know the basics of the EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) platform.

To access the nodes, you’ll need an encryption key. Create a new one specifically for Galera, using a tool such as ssh-keygen. Add that key to AWS, under Key Pairs.

Running Galera Cluster effectively on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and comparing it to RDS and Aurora (EMEA and USA webinar)

Do you want to run Galera Cluster in the cloud? Why not learn to setup a 3-node Galera Cluster using Amazon Web Services (AWS) Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), and run it yourself (3-node because this is the minimum preferred size; you can have a 5, 7, or 9 node cluster too — not in the demo though!). In this webinar, we will cover the steps to do this, with a demonstration of how easy it is for you to do. We will also cover how you may want to load balance traffic to your Galera Cluster using a proxy like ProxySQL.

In addition, we will cover why you may want to run a 3-node (or more) Galera Cluster (multi-master synchronous clusters) instead of (or in addition to) using Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) MySQL, which has the ability to have asynchronous replication (Read Replicas), and High Availability provided by DRBD (Multi-AZ). We will also cover where Galera Cluster differs from Amazon Aurora RDS for MySQL.

Galera Cluster at Percona Live Austin, DataOps.Barcelona and where next

It is July now, and summer is upon us. The team at Codership are busy making Galera Cluster 4 for MySQL, and we are just hot of the heels of celebrating the launch of Galera Cluster 4 with MariaDB Server 10.4

At the end of May, Galera Cluster had a booth and several talks at Percona Live Austin. This was the first time the event happened there, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The key takeaway from that event would be Seppo Jaakola’s talk titled: Galera Cluster New Features. It covered the then upcoming MariaDB Server 10.4 release with Galera Cluster 4, went in-depth into how streaming replication works …

Galera Cluster 4 with MariaDB 10.4

Congratulations to Team MariaDB at MariaDB Corporation and MariaDB Foundation for releasing MariaDB 10.4.6 as Generally Available (GA) last week on 18 June 2019. This release is very exciting for Galera Cluster users as it comes with Galera 4 (it is now the first server to come with it!), with Galera wsrep library version 26.4.2.

What can Galera Cluster users expect from MariaDB 10.4? Some high level features include:

  • Streaming replication — a huge boost to large transaction support, since the node breaks transactions into fragments, replicates and certifies it across all secondary nodes while the transaction is still in progress. Read more about it in our dedicated documentation on streaming replication as well …

MariaDB OpenWorks was an ocean of Galera Cluster activity

MariaDB OpenWorks happened February 25 – 27, 2019 in New York City. It was filled with plenty of activity.

The keynote by Michael Howard, C.E.O. of MariaDB, is an interesting watch, one with many quoted articles especially around “strip-mining open-source technologies and companies,” and “abusing the license and privilege, and not giving back to the community.” Many articles were written about this topic, and it’s clear that open-source has arrived considering all of the success around the IBM acquisition of Red Hat, the Elastic I.P.O., the Microsoft acquisition of GitHub, the SalesForce acquisition fo MuleSoft and the MongoDB I.P.O.

Seppo Jaakola, the C.E.O. of Codership, talked about …
