Performance of Percona Server for MySQL on Intel Server Systems using HDD, SATA SSD, and NVMe SSD as Different Storage Mediums

We’re moving along on the first day at Percona Live Data Performance Conference 2016, and I was able to attend a lecture from Intel’s Ken LeTourneau on Performance of Percona Server for MySQL on Intel Server Systems using HDD, SATA SSD, and NVMe SSD as Different Storage Mediums. In this talk, Ken reviewed some benchmark testing he did using MySQL on various types of storage mediums. This talk looked at the performance of Percona Server for MySQL for Linux running on the same Intel system, but with three different storage configurations. We looked at and compared the performance of:

  1. a RAID of HDD
  2. a RAID of SATA SSD
  3. a RAID of NVMe SSD

In the talk,  Ken covered the hardware and system …

Creating Geo-Enabled applications with MongoDB, GeoJSON and MySQL

This blog post will discuss creating geo-enabled applications with MongoDB, GeoJSON and MySQL.

Introduction

Recently I published a blog post about the new GIS features in MySQL 5.7. Today I’ve looked into how to use MongoDB (I’ve tested with 3.0 and 3.2, with 3.2 being much faster) for the same purpose. I will also talk about GIS in MySQL and MongoDB at Percona Live next week (together with my colleague …

Voting for talks at the Percona Live Data Performance Conference 2016

So this year the Percona Live conference has a new name — it is the “Data Performance Conference” (presumably for a much broader appeal and the fact that Percona is now in the MongoDB world as well). And the next new thing to note? You have to go through a process of “community voting”, i.e. the speaker has to promote their talks before via their own channels to see how many votes they can get (we tried this before at the MySQL & Friends Devroom at FOSDEM; in this case, please remember you also need to create a new account and actually vote while logged in).

I hope you vote for Sergei, Monty and my proposals!

Percona Live 2016 Call for Papers Open! Introducing: Community Voting

The Call for Papers for the fifth annual Percona Live Data Performance Conference and Expo (formerly MySQL Conference and Expo) taking place April 18-21, 2016, in Santa Clara, California, is now officially open!

Ask yourself… “Do I have…”

  • Fresh ideas?
  • Enlightening case studies?
  • Insight on best practices?
  • In-depth technical knowlege?

If the answer to any of these is “YES,” then you need to submit your proposal for a chance to speak at Percona Live 2016. Speaking is a great way to broaden not only the awareness of your company with an intelligent and engaged audience of software …

Percona Live Europe is now over, MySQL is not

Percona Live Europe is now more than a week away. l left Amsterdam with a positive thought: it has been the best European event for MySQL so far. Maybe the reason is that I saw the attendance increasing, or maybe it was the quality of the talks, or because I heard others making the same comment, and I also saw a reinvigorated MySQL ecosystem.
There are three main aspects I want to highlight.

1. MySQL 5.7 and the strong presence of the Oracle/MySQL team
There have been good talks and keynotes on MySQL 5.7. It is a sign of the strong commitment of Oracle towards MySQL. I think there is an even more important point. The most interesting features in 5.7 and the projects still in MySQL Labs derive or are in some way inspired by features available from other vendors. Some examples:

  • The JSON datatype from …

Facebook’s Simon Martin on semi-synchronous replication

Facebook, with 1.49 billion monthly active users,  is one of the world’s top MySQL users. Simon Martin, a production engineer on Facebook’s MySQL Infrastructure team, has been working with MySQL for most of his career, starting from 2 servers built out of spare parts and moving through to one of the largest deployments in the world.

Simon will be sharing some of the challenges Facebook has tackled as it rolled out semi-synchronous replication across the company’s different services at Percona Live Amsterdam on Sept. 22. His talk is aptly titled, “The highs and lows of semi-synchronous replication.” I sat down, virtually, with Simon the other day. Our conversation is below, but first, as a special reward to my readers, save €20 on your Percona Live registration by entering promo code …
