What a great event ! I got very positive feedback for this extended preFOSDEM MySQL Day 2020.

Before my summary, I wanted to thank again all speakers and attendees. Without you this event won’t even exist. And thank you to ICAB for hosting us yet another time !

As you may know, we had 2 parallel tracks for 2 consecutive days. We had very valuable technical content from the MySQL developers and also from the external community members who talked about their favorite database.

There was a large interest in MySQL NDB Cluster and it was obvious that the nice presentations we had, encouraged people to try the worlds highest performance open source in-memory database (and they can even test it on their laptop with DBDeployer). Using numbers produced already with MySQL Cluster 7.6.10 we have
shown that NDB Cluster is the world's fastest Key-Value store using
the Yahoo Cloud Serving Benchmark (YCSB) Workload A.

We reached 1.4M operations using 2 Data Nodes and 2.8M operations
using a 4 Data Node setup. All this using a standard JDBC driver.
Obviously using a specialised ClusterJ client will improve performance
further. These benchmarks was executed by Bernd Ocklin.

The benchmark was executed in the Oracle Cloud. Each Data Node used
a Bare Metal Server using DenseIO which have 52 CPU cores with
8 NVMe drives.

We will have a look at a new feature in MySQL 8.0 called binlog encryption. This feature is available from the MySQL version 8.0.14 or above.

As a part of Mydbops Consulting we have a below problem statement from one of our client.

“We have a high powered server for reporting which in turn powers our internal dashboard for viewing the logistics status.Even with a high end hardware, we had a heavy CPU usage and which in turn triggers spikes in replication lag and slowness. Below is the hardware configuration.“

One thing that we announced in the GA release of MySQL Cluster 8.0 is
that we now support using 3 and 4 replicas. Actually the NDB software
was designed to support 1 through 4 replicas from the very get go in the
1990s. The reason it has not been supported is simply that we haven't
had any regular testing effort attached to it. Thus we haven't felt that
we can support such an important feature without having proper testing
of it.

What we did in the development of MySQL Cluster 8.0 is that we have
added a number of new configurations with both 3 replicas and with
4 replicas. These configurations will now be used in our daily testing
of NDB.

In the process of working on this we found some issues with arbitration
already in MySQL Cluster 7.6. This issue was fixed in 7.6 already.

MySQL and PHP is a love story that started long time ago. However the love story with MySQL 8.0 was a bit slower to start… but don’t worry it rules now !

The support of MySQL 8.0’s new default authentication method in PHP took some time and was added in PHP 7.2.8 but removed in PHP 7.2.11.

Now it’s fully supported in PHP 7.4 !

If you have installed PHP 7.4, you can see that the new plugin auth_plugin_caching_sha2_passwordis now available:

In my road trip of the Open Source projects using MySQL, after having tested WordPress, Drupal and Joomla, let’s try to install Magento using MySQL 8.0 !

In Magento’s manual, we can see that the project requires MySQL 5.6 and supports 5.7.x since versoin 2.1.2.

In my test, I will use Magento 2.3.3, the latest stable when writing this article.
