Why is the ibdata1 file continuously growing in MySQL?

We receive this question about the ibdata1 file in MySQL very often in Percona Support.

The panic starts when the monitoring server sends an alert about the storage of the MySQL server – saying that the disk is about to get filled.

After some research you realize that most of the disk space is used by the InnoDB’s shared tablespace ibdata1. You have innodb_file_per_table enabled, so the question is:

What is stored in ibdata1?

When you have innodb_file_per_table enabled, the tables are stored in their own tablespace but the shared tablespace is still used to store other InnoDB’s internal …

Want to archive tables? Use Percona Toolkit’s pt-archiver

Percona Toolkit’s pt-archiver is one of the best utilities to archive the records from large tables to another tables or files. One interesting thing is that pt-archiver is a read-write tool. It deletes data from the source by default, so after archiving you don’t need to delete it separately.

As it is done by default, you should take care before actually running it on then production server. You can test your archiving jobs with the – dry-run  OR you can use the –no-delete option if you’re not sure about. The purpose of this script is mainly to archive old data from the table without impacting OLTP queries and insert the data into …

Percona Server 5.6 Webinar follow-up and Q&A

Good news everyone! I recently presented a webinar: Percona Server 5.6: Enterprise Grade MySQL. It was also recorded so you can watch along or view the slide deck. As with all my talks, I am not simply reading the slides so it really is worth to listen to the audio rather than just glance through the slide deck.

There were a number of great questions asked which I’ll answer below:

Q: How does Stewart feel about this version of 5.6 taking into consideration “Stewart’s .20 rule?” (ref 2013 Percona Live Conference).

A: For those who aren’t familiar with it, I have a rule which I call “Stewart’s dot twenty rule” which I’ve posted a few times about on my personal blog. It …

Growth of Percona software releases

It was once said that “real artists ship.” In looking over the history of Percona software releases, we are currently shipping more software than ever before.

First, let’s look at Percona Server. Let’s look at all major versions: 5.1, 5.5 and 5.6 as well as the total for each year. The estimate for 2013 comes from assuming the second half of 2013 is similar to the first half.

Percona Server releases per year

In 2011, when Percona Server 5.5 came along, we see a sharp reduction in Percona Server 5.1 releases (remember that there’s at least one Percona Server 5.1 release for each Oracle MySQL 5.1 release, and this reduction is likely a reflection of the reduction of releases from Oracle). In 2011, 2012 and 2013 we see a pretty steady number of Percona Server 5.1 releases. It seems that 5.1 is not going anywhere yet.

For Percona Server 5.5, we see an increase in 2012, which likely mirrors an …

Crash-resistant replication: How to avoid MySQL replication errors

Percona Server’s “crash-resistant replication” feature is useful in versions 5.1 through 5.5. However, in Percona Server 5.6 it’s replaced with Oracle MySQL 5.6′s “crash safe replication” feature, which has it’s own implementation (you can read more about it here).

A MySQL slave normally stores its position in files master.info and relay-log.info which are updated by slave IO_THREAD & slave SQL_THREAD respectively. The file master.info contains connection info & replication coordinates showing how many events were fetched from the master binary log. The relay-log.info, on the other hand, represents info showing the positions where the slave applied those events. You can read more about slave status logs …
