Percona Live London 2013 and Percona Live MySQL Conference & Expo 2014

Thanks to everyone who participated in Percona Live London 2013. We had a great event with nearly 20% higher attendance versus 2012. The conference featured 10 tutorial sessions on Monday and 4 keynotes and 30 breakout sessions on Tuesday.

I personally found the keynotes highly interesting. Peter Zaitsev of Percona discussed the changing face …

How Percona tested Percona Server 5.6: A world premiere in advanced testing

8PM. One of the servers found a critical bug. Hop online and discuss, log bug. 10PM. Patch ready. 10:30PM. New build ready. 10:45PM. New RQG run initiated. This was by no means an uncommon sight during the months of testing that went into Percona Server 5.6, in fact it was commonplace.

At a certain point, we had 3 very high end servers (modern cpu’s, heaps of cores and memory), all equipped with either fast SSD’s or Fusion-io flash storage, executing thousands of trials, 8 in parallel per server, each executing 1 to 25 mysql threads per running mysqld instance.

And that was just the final months of testing. Before that much work was done on finding “every last bug out there”. We discovered many bugs in both upstream (Oracle’s MySQL 5.6) and in Percona Server 5.6. I personally logged around 100 bugs, but the total count would be much higher still.

My colleague …

Stewart is speaking at OSDC 2013 in Auckland!

I’ll be speaking at the upcoming Open Source Developers Conference (OSDC 2013) in Auckland, New Zealand! It’s on October 21st-23rd and you should go here right now and register. I’m giving two talks at OSDC this year:

  • MySQL in the cloud, As A Service (Monday 21st, 12:00pm)
There is no one magic solution to having MySQL As A Service work well, it’s a lot of small moving parts and options that need to be set, monitored and configured. We may wish it was different, or look at other database technologies, but there is a lot of legacy code that talks to MySQL, with all it’s idiosyncrasies – and we need to be able to …
