Jonathan Schwartz's Keynote at the 2008 MySQL Conference

Firstly, I finally realized who Jonathan Schwartz reminds me of:

That's right, comedian and magician Penn Jillette.

Schwartz started by saying, "enough of this free software stuff!" It got lots of laughs. He started to talk about Sun's agenda, and mentioned that MySQL and Sun had similar values, as well as similar dysfunctions as well -- particularly that each engineer has his/her own opinion.

Slides from "Real World Web: Performance & Scalability, MySQL Edition"

The slides from my tutorial yesterday are up at develooper.com. 189 slides this year! A handful of people have told me today (and more yesterday obviously) that they learned a lot and got new ideas for how to build things - yay!

I’m considering putting up a version of the slides with sound. Would anyone want a 3 hour quicktime movie of that?

Well, maybe split up into smaller bits, but you get the idea. You wouldn’t get the hand waving, but you would get a bunch more detail, obviously.

I actually had audio recorded, but I haven’t checked how it came out, yet, and I’d have to make a synchronized movie version of the slides (and …

MySQL UC is coming up in a few days and I already flew in today (friday).

What a lucky day. Not only it is nice and warm today in San Francisco, no, I also got upgrade to Business to could sleep every well in those cozy seats. The 747 was packed and looks like to had to kick out some frequent flyers to Business to get everyone in. Well, glad I could help.

Now I'm in the 21st floor of the Hilton looking over the Bay to Alcatraz, to Telegraph Hill and Embarcadero. Life is tough.

For monday, expect a nice tutorial on MySQL Proxy given by Giuseppe and me and another session on Proxy on Thursday. See you in Santa Clara.

Matthew Aslett and I are in San Francisco for the next few days at the Open Source Business Conference (OSBC). We will be moderating a total of three panels this year. Matthew’s panel on the the state of the open source database market is especially interesting, given that we are days away from publishing a report on the same topic (more details on that in a day or two). For those of you reading this blog entry from OSBC, I am hoping you’ll attend the panels listed below…

MySQL Conference Sessions

At this year’s MySQL Conference & Expo, taking place in Santa Clara, California in mid-April, I’m giving two sessions:

  • Best Practices for Database Administrators
  • Database Security Using White-Hat Google Hacking

You can see more info about me here, including descriptions of the workshops.

I look forward to seeing many of you there. Make sure you say hello!

Coming to America

I’ve been making preparations this week for the panel I’m moderating at this year’s OSBC conference in San Francisco. The title is The State of the Open Source Database Market, and we’re lucky enough to have a great panel, featuring: Andy Astor, CEO, EnterpriseDB; Roger Burkhardt, President & CEO, Ingres; Ken Jacobs, VP Product Strategy, Server Technologies Division, Oracle; and Zack Urlocker, EVP of Products, MySQL.

Everyone’s open to answering whatever questions the audience throws at them (within reason) so with the combined knowledge and expertise on offer it should be an interesting and entertaining session. I’ll try not to get in the way!

I’m also looking forward to putting some names to faces as this will be my first OSBC event. I’m here all …

MySQL conference tutorial almost sold out

It looks like my tutorial is almost sold out (and so are several of the others already!)

So if you're planning to go to the MySQL conference, don't delay - go sign up!

Real World Web: Performance & Scalability, MySQL Edition

In exactly two months - April 14th - I'm doing a scalability tutorial at the MySQL conference.

It'll, of course, be based on the material I've been throwing around since 2001, but once again it's greatly expanded, extended and improved! It should be lots of fun.

I've yet to hear anyone tell me that they wasted their time with this particular session and I don't think people are just being polite because I'm often told that people find it tremendously useful. So go sign up already. And don't pay any attention to Brian Aker and …
