Google Cloud SQL is a fully managed database service that makes it easy to set-up, maintain, manage, and administer your relational MySQL databases in the cloud. Cloud SQL allows you to focus on your applications rather than administering your databases. Hosted on Google Cloud Platform, Cloud SQL provides a database infrastructure for applications running anywhere.

To evaluate the performance of Google’s Cloud SQL Instances, we ran the tpcc-mysql benchmarking utility with a scale factor of 500 warehouses. The purpose of running tpcc-mysql on each system was to determine the throughput of each instance under varying loads (number of connections or threads).

While the benchmark tests were being run, we took regular snapshots of the following data using MySQL Workbench.

• Number of select transactions executed per second
• Number of insert transactions executed per second
• Number of update …

So this year the Percona Live conference has a new name — it is the “Data Performance Conference” (presumably for a much broader appeal and the fact that Percona is now in the MongoDB world as well). And the next new thing to note? Continuing on with the cloud theme, I think its worth noting that since mid-2014, Rackspace has offered MariaDB (as well as MySQL and Percona Server) in the cloud, as part of their Cloud Databases offering. It’s powered by OpenStack.

Recently at Percona Live Amsterdam I gave a talk titled Databases in the Hosted Cloud (I’m told I got a 4/5 rating for this talk). It was before AWS re:Invent, so obviously some of the details in the talk have changed. For one, now there is also Amazon RDS for MariaDB. Amazon has just released their RDS Migration Tool, and Pythian has recently undertaken training to use for our clients. I wanted to share my initial thoughts on the tool, give some background on its internals, and provide a walk-through on the functionality it will be most commonly used for.

There are many factors to consider when evaluating cloud service providers, including cost, performance, and high availability and disaster recovery options. One of the most critical and overlooked elements of any cloud offering though, is the ease of migration. Often, weeks are spent evaluating all of the options only to discover after the choice is made that it will take hours of expensive downtime to complete the migration, and that there is no good rollback option in the case of failure.
