New “Meet The MySQL Experts” Podcast Series

During the past year, we’ve put a lot of emphasis at Oracle on sharing information with the MySQL Community. Actions included PR and communications not only about GA products but also about development milestone releases and features available in labs.mysql.com, as well as more technical articles, more blogs, participation to conferences…etc. We very much value the feedback and discussions such communications generate.

We therefore plan to keep communicating this way, and do even more. This is why we’re now very pleased to announce a new Oracle podcast series entitled “Meet the MySQL Experts”! We plan to, once a month, interview an Oracle MySQL Engineer who will share information about his/her domain expertise, and what he/she is currently working on.

For the first edition, it was my …

Trocha otevřenosti od SOZA

Picture taken from http://www.kopfnote.net/ under the terms of CC-BY-NC-SA

Introducing the Tungsten-toolbox
After the public home for Tungsten Replicator, we needed another place where to host complementary tools. We discussed the pros and cons of hosting these tools in the same place where we publish Tungsten, but in the end we decided that it's more practical to have a separate project, where we can publish tools related to database replication, no matter if they are dedicated to Tungsten or if they can work with other replication systems. So, here it is. We have now Tungsten Toolbox, a site where we will collect our tools and accept contributions from others.

We have already a few tools that, after being cleaned up, will …

Oracle at fisl12 (Porto Alegre, Brazil, 2011-06-29/2011-07-02)

fisl12 is likely the largest free and open source software event in Latin America. This year, it takes place in Porto Alegre, Brazil, from June 29th to July 2nd. Oracle is a gold sponsor of the event and I will attend it as a speaker. I feel honoured and excited to be there – for me it will be the first visit to the South American continent.

They already have over 3000 registered attendees, so this definitely is going to be a great conference. There is quite a number of well-known names on the speaker roster and I look forward to meeting a lot of familar faces there.

The agenda is still under development but quite impressive already – …

Mac OS X users can install MariaDB via Homebrew

The gist of it is, if you’ve installed Mac OS X and you use Homebrew, you’ll be pleased to note that you’re just a brew install away for getting a working MariaDB. Yes, that’s right, simply do: brew install mariadb and that’s it — you’ll have MariaDB (currently 5.2.6) installed in no time. For further documentation and a step-by-step guide, visit the Knowledgebase article: Building MariaDB on Mac OS X using Homebrew.

What happened to MySQL Forge?

Update
Soon after I posted this article, the Forge came back online! Thanks!

MySQL Forge has been offline for two days now. (2011-06-14) No sign of acknowledgement of this problem from the MySQL team. What is happening? For those not well acquainted with MySQL Forge, here are the facts. The MySQL Forge is a site that was intended to contain all community contributions. The reality did not follow the plans very closely, and some sections of the forge ended up with less contents than what should be useful. However, there are a few sections of the forge that are extremely useful to users:

  • The Wiki, which is full of irreplaceable documentation, such as the MySQL internals, description of preview features, slides and recordings of MySQL University, manual of many tools (such as the …
