After the opening keynote at the MySQL Conference, there was
the usual ceremony of the MySQL community awards. Since
Oracle declined to continue in the MySQL AB tradition of
awarding the contributions from the community, the community
itself has taken over. I was pleasantly surprised to find my name among the recipients, and even more about the prize awarded to my company's product, the Tungsten Replicator. The surprise comes because we have been making noise about this product for only a few months, after we finalized our plans to split the company products between open source and enterprise. This year was the first year the public could nominate candidates for these awards. We got in many nominations and this really helped the panel to get an overview of everything that is noteworthy in the MySQL ecosystem right now. Thank you to everyone who participated by sending in nominations.
In the first category the panel received and debated over a dozen suggestions. There are so many great people in this community, it is easy to think of people who truly deserve to be awarded. There were however two persons who clearly stood out with a track record of years and years of broad and really key contributions to the MySQL community. It's now 2 hours until I depart for San Francisco and then Santa Clara for this year's MySQL Conference. Can't wait to meet everyone and to learn about cool new things (2 solutions for parallelizing replication, Drizzle, Xtrabackup...)
This year I am involved in two BoF sessions: Severalnines ClusterControl with Johan Anderson and Xtrabackup Manager with Lachlan Mulcahy. Both of these are about brand new topics, this being the first time they are presented, so I'm excited to be working with these guys.

The MySQL Council has not being idle. We have
addressed the bugs database concerns, and we
are continuing our dialog.
To do a better job, we would like to hear more from the
community. Unlike other established user groups, MySQL does not
have a world wide organization for its users. The council exists
on a voluntary basis, and we are seeking support from the rest of
you. Please let your voice heard. There are three main channels
for this:

Longtime MySQL-er Lenz Grimmer
Lenz Grimmer
is leaving the MySQL side of the business to work in the Linux and Virtualization side of the Oracle business. He came from SuSE Linux and has retained interest in that area all the many years he helped make MySQL into the ubiquitous tool that it is. Lenz’s list of accomplishments is too long to note here and working with him on the MySQL Community Team has been a tremendous pleasure. He is not dropping off the face of the earth and will presenting at Collaborate 11 .

The headline above could fit in a tweet, but Drizzle making its first release almost 3 years after the project started deserves a blog post.
Brian Aker has a long blog post looking back at these 3 years (and even longer into MySQL history). Stewart Smith has an entertaining personal perspective. .frm files, I will not miss you (if I were to start using Drizzle, that is). Planet Drizzle has an avalanche of posts from most Drizzle devs celebrating this event.

Last week I managed to attend virtual openSUSE 11.4 Release party in Second Life. I got registered there especially to able to attend this event so it took me some time to figure out how it all works. Although I’m still learning how Second Life works, I’m now able to perform basic tasks and move around freely. Big thanks to Morgane Marquis for helping me. I’m still learning new stuff and it’s fun.
Now back to the release party. We meet at Geekos Place in Second Life. It is awesome place to visit and you still can. Lot of geekos everywhere. We talked, had a few beers and danced. We had DJ Ariella to take care about the music. She is from Australia and she had to wake up insanelly early (I think something like 5am) to be our DJ. Big thanks to her. …

Every morning before any of the meetings get started I print out a small one page newsletter which contains (among other things) the program for the day. Rather than keep them private, Colin suggested I post them here. I call the newsletter the “MariaDB Programador de Journal” which (I think) translates to “MariaDB Programmer’s Journal” in Portuguese.
