MySQL 8 and MySQL 5.7 Memory Consumption on Small Devices

While we often run MySQL on larger scale systems in Production for Test and Dev, sometimes we want to run MySQL on the tiniest cloud instances possible or just run it on our laptops. In these cases, MySQL 8 and MySQL 5.7 memory consumption is quite important.

In comparing MySQL 8 vs MySQL 5.7, you should know that MySQL 8 uses more memory. Basic tests on a 1GB VM with MySQL 8 and MySQL 5.7 (actually they’re Percona Server versions) running the same light workload, I see the following vmstat output:

MySQL 5.7 vmstat output

How to Build a Percona Server “Stack” on a Raspberry Pi 3+

The blog post How to Compile Percona Server for MySQL 5.7 in Raspberry Pi 3 by Walter Garcia, inspired me to create an updated install of Percona Server for the Raspberry Pi 3+.

This how-to post covers installing from source and being able to use Percona Server for MySQL in any of your maker projects. I have included everything you need to have a complete Percona Server, ready to store data collection for your weather station, your GPS data, or any other project you can think of that would require data collection in a database.

My years of hands-on support of Percona Server enable me to customize the install a bit. I wanted to build a full Percona …

MySQL InnoDB Sorted Index Builds

It’s not essential to understand how MySQL® and Percona Server for MySQL build indexes. However, if you have an understanding of the processing, it could help when you want to reserve an appropriate amount of space for data inserts. From MySQL 5.7, developers changed the way they built secondary indexes for InnoDB, applying a bottom-up rather than the top-down approach used in earlier releases. In this post, I’ll walk through an example to show how an InnoDB index is built. At the end, I’ll explain how you can use this understanding to set an appropriate value for innodb_fill_factor.

Index building process

To build an index on a table with existing data, there are the following phases in InnoDB

  1. Read phase (read from clustered index and build secondary index entries)
  2. Merge sort phase
