ZRM for MySQL Cluster Edition

ZRM for MySQL Cluster Edition, released during MySQL users conference last month, provides non-blocking backup and recovery for MySQL cluster databases. In addition to backup and recovery for MySQL clusters, the cluster edition also supports online backup and recovery of other MySQL storage engines such as MyISAM, InnoDB. Most applications using MySQL Clusters also store data in other storage engines. The Cluster edition provides a common user interface for backing and recovering applications that use multiple MySQL storage engines.

ZRM for MySQL supports both MySQL Cluster as well as the MySQL Cluster Carrier Grade edition.

New ideas and users? requirements for backup of MySQL

The MySQL User’s Conference provides very fertile environment for new ideas. For example, last year we came to the conference with a conviction to build a MySQL agent for our Amanda Enterprise backup and recovery software. However, after talking to many MySQL users about their backup needs we got convinced that stand-alone solution optimized for MySQL DBAs was a better way to go, and that is how Zmanda Recovery Manager for MySQL was conceived.

This year we received a lot of insightful feedback and suggestions from MySQL users and our customers. Special thanks to MySQL engineering and product management for providing their perspective. Here are the major takeaways for us, the MySQL backup guys:

  • Back up the MySQL server configuration files when you do backup of the database — that will simplify …

Data Protection for the LAMP Economy

The value of data stored in LAMP applications is increasing at an exponential pace. Indeed, the LAMP stack fuels an economy of its own - with its own currency, lingo and players. While e-commerce is the clear and present evidence of the LAMP powered economy, the currency for this economy is by no means just monetary. Value is manifested in many factors other than financial gains: personal reputation and legacy, karma points, creativity etc. The LAMP stack fires up innovation by enabling new ideas - you can quickly and cost-effectively prototype a concept which other’s may find bizarre.

User generated content (UGC) is one key currency of the LAMP stack. UGC, even votes (ok, diggs) on other’s UGC store tangible and lasting value. While naming “You”, a proxy for UGC, the Time’s Person of the Year 2006, The Time magazine said: “It’s a story about community and collaboration on a scale never seen before. It’s about the many …

Open Source ?Unconference? in India

On Saturday, 24th March ‘07, Open Source ?Unconference? was held at Mumbai, India.

It was great learning experience for everyone and a good event to network with MySQL users and developers in India. K. K. George, the project leader for open source Zmanda Recovery Manager for MySQL, gave a talk about MySQL backup and recovery. Zmanda Recovery Manager is Zmanda’s MySQL backup and recovery project that has become quite popular with MySQL administrators. It has scheduling, reporting and monitoring functionalities for MySQL databases. In addition, it can do incremental backups and can also parse the complex binary log files of MySQL dump. Remote MySQL server backup is also supported through SSH and socket options. There was lot of …

Backup and recovery benchmarks with Zmanda Recovery Manager for MySQL

The MySQL database has become the world?s most popular open source database because of its fast performance, high reliability and ease of use. The DBAs expect the same virtues from a backup solution for MySQL. Often times we are asked what performance to expect from Zmanda Recovery Manager (ZRM) for MySQL. That is why recently we measured backup and recovery performance for MyISAM and InnoDB storage engines using various backup methods available with ZRM.

In our testing we used MySQL 5.0 running Netflix databases available as part of Netflix Prize project. Our 2-way Red Hat Enterprise 4 server with 4 GB of memory was able to copy large files with an average transfer rate of 37 Mb/s.

All details and results are described in a white paper available with a free registration to the Zmanda Network. Here are the important takeaways:

  • Logical backups and …

What, Where, When and How of Backup - We skipped ?Why?

Today we launched our Amanda Enterprise Edition 2.6. This comes with Zmanda Management Console - a totally cool way to install, configure and manage backup environments. This was result of an amazing effort done by our developers in past few months. This is how the navigation bar of the Zmanda Management Console (ZMC) looks like:

One of our most important goals while designing a graphical interface for Amanda was to simplify the life of a backup administrator. We found existing backup products in the market to be unnecessarily complex to setup and manage. I (and rest of Zmanda team) believe that managing your backups should be simple. In order to get backup going, all we need to know is:

What do you want to backup? (e.g. what hosts, filesystems and applications)
Where do you want to …
