Multi Tb migration Using mydumper

In this post I will explain how to transfer a multi terabyte size database between two MySQL instances using mydumper, which is a logical backup and restore tool that works in parallel. I will also cover the case where you need to transfer only a subset of data.

Big tables are often problematic because of the amount of time needed to do mysqldump/restore which is single threaded. It is not uncommon for this type of process to take several days.

From MySQL 5.6 and on, we also have transportable tablespaces, but there are some limitations with that approach.

Physical backups (e.g. xtrabackup) have the advantage to be faster, but there are some scenarios where you still need/want a logical backup (e.g migrating to RDS/Aurora/Google Cloud SQL).

Using Transportable Tablespaces with Partitioned Tables

Overview

In this post I will explain how to transfer a partitioned table using transportable tablespaces on MySQL 5.6. Note that the operation is not officially supported until MySQL 5.7, as the discard tablespace operation will fail if it is run against a partitioned table on MySQL 5.6.

The workaround is transferring each individual partition as if it was a standalone table. Continue reading to learn more about the detailed procedure.

Experiments with MySQL 5.7’s Online Buffer Pool Resize

One of the interesting features introduced in MySQL 5.7 is that innodb_buffer_pool_size is a dynamic variable (since 5.7.5, to be more specific). Yet, past experience tells us that just because a variable is dynamic, it does not make it is safe to change it on the fly.

To find out how safe this new feature is, I measured throughput on a synthetic workload (sysbench 1.0 running the oltp script) as I made changes to this variable. In this post, I will show the results that came through.
