Ignite MySQL at the MySQL Conference and Expo

I’ll be giving a talk tonight at the Ignite MySQL! For those of you who don’t know about this format, I suggest that you check out Ignite!.  The basic premise is:

Fast-paced, fun, thought-provoking, social, local, global—Ignite is all of these and more. It’s a high-energy evening of 5-minute talks by people who have an idea—and the guts to get onstage and share it with their hometown crowd.

My talk will be called Backups Don’t Make Me Money

Backups aren’t exciting or glamorous. They don’t make you money and there’s no such thing as a valid backup. But, understanding your restores is exciting! Let me draw you a few pictures of database restores at their most ironic, entertaining, and even thrilling. Five minutes, 20 slides auto advancing every 15 seconds.  It will be …

New York and Durham (Houston?)

Two reminders for upcoming appearances: This Saturday I’ll be presenting a 24-hour art collaboration with Evan Roth at Seven on Seven at the New Museum. On Monday I’ll be in Durham, North Carolina to speak at Duke University. If you’re interested in the latter, leave a comment and I’ll make sure you get the details. We don’t have a ton of room but I’d like ma.tt readers to be able to attend. After that I’ll be in Houston briefly if anyone wants to do a meetup.

Four short links: 17 March 2010
  1. Common MySQL Queries -- a useful reference.
  2. MySociety's Next 12 Months -- two new projects, FixMyTransport and "Project Fosbury". The latter is a more general tool to help people organise their own campaigns for change.
  3. riak -- scalable key-value store with JSON interface. (via joshua on Delicious)
  4. Notes from NoSQL Live Boston -- full of juicy nuggets of info from the NoSQL conference.

MySQL and Java - The World's Most Popular Development Platforms

On Feb 10, 2010 we've held an event in Milan, explaining why MySQL and Java are the most popular development platforms.

Our annual MySQL User Survey conducted in early 2009 showed that 57%  of those surveyed use Java to develop their MySQL applications.

My speech was all about MySQL and its usage from Java applications with various connectors. I explained the capabilities of Connector/J and Connector/MXJ, you can see relevant on demand webinars here.

After that, I moved to the usage of MySQL Cluster from Java applications, …

Frei nach dem Motto: back it up the easy way...

Die "Donnerstags-Vorträge" werden sowohl in Würzburg als auch in München gehalten. Bei Interesse einfach das Blog beobachten, um auf dem Laufenden zu bleiben!
Wir freuen uns auf viele Teilnehmer!

LinuxTag 2010: Call for Papers Ends Today

LinuxTag is the most important place for Linux and open source software in Europe. Last year, LinuxTag had over ten thousand attendees, and over 300 speakers. This year, the 16th LinuxTag will be June 9-12, 2010 at the Berlin Fairgrounds in Germany.

LinuxTag seeks exciting and suitable proposals for presentations in the conference tracks. The Call for Papers ends today.

I am proud to be a member of the LinuxTag Program Committee. Although a lot of proposals have already been submitted, there are some topics missing that I’d personally like to see covered. So, if you’re up for a last minute submission, get your inspiration from the following list:

  • Is/was the recent economic crisis an …

18/Nov/2009 - The Open Source Data Warehouse Revolution

On the 18th of November we've hold in Milan an event focused on Open Source Data Warehousing.

For many organizations, data warehouses are simply too costly to buy, too costly to implement and too costly to maintain. Data warehousing is still a luxury of deep-pocketed organizations, although the resulting benefits can be virtually reaped by companies of all sizes.
Open Source Software is changing the rules again, lowering the economic barriers to undertake Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing projects.

During the event we proved that MySQL can help organizations to achieve higher ROI on their projects. With the support of our partners, Infobright and Talend, we showed how to design, deploy and manage a multi-terabyte Data Warehouse with Open Source Software.

Participants have shown a …

Harish Pillay and Brian Aker debate with Richard Stallman (Part 2)

The attendees were not satisfied with the first answer RMS gave to Brian, that Harish Pillay (Chief Technical Architect, Red Hat Singapore), chose to ask RMS what more he had to say, with regards to the letter he’d written. He answered quite candidly in this video, which Brian chimed in for as well.

The back channel for all this was Twitter… Don’t hesitate to follow @harishpillay, @brianaker, @piawaugh or even @webmink
