During the MySQL Users Conference, Edward Screven did a keynote presentation that made many of us feel warm and fuzzy about Oracle's future plans for MySQL. If you advance 16m 25s into the presentation, it even gives something to rejoice the MySQL Enterprise customers: "Backup is now included". He didn't say much more after that. Asking around at the conference the days following this announcement, I couldn't get a straight answer about when and how would it be available for existing customers.

Now, 6 months later (give or take a couple of weeks), the MySQL Enterprise Features page has no signs of the now included MySQL Enterprise Backup (the utility previously known as InnoDB Hot Backup) and there has been no other news supporting Edward's announcement …

Congratulations to Chris Tooley who suggested the name. Chris said about Aria in his submission, “Maria without the ‘M’, plus aria is a pleasant musical term.” Chris is now the proud new owner of a System 76 Meerkat net-top computer. Thanks to our good friends at System76 for providing this nifty prize.

Hopefully, in time, “Aria” will also be a pleasing database engine term. And now we will not have the confusion between MariaDB and Maria.

Tokutek is pleased to announce immediate availability of TokuDB for MySQL, version 4.0. It is designed for continuous querying and analysis of large volumes of rapidly arriving and changing data, while maintaining full ACID properties.

New in TokuDB v4.0 is our multi-threaded Fast Loader. Capable of utilizing all available CPU cores, the Fast Loader greatly accelerates creating a new index or initializing a database with a bulk load. On an 8 core machine, loading operations speed up by over 4x and with 16 cores the acceleration is even greater.

OpenSQL Camp Boston 2010 will be held at the Stata Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, October 15-17, 2010.

The Stata Center was designed by Frank Gehry and was completed in 2005. The Stata Center houses CSAIL (The MIT Computer Science and Artifical Intelligence Laboratory) and LIDS (The MIT Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems). MariaDB 5.1.44b Linux and Solaris binaries, Ubuntu/Debian/CentOS packages, and source are now available for download.

This is a bugfix/security release of MariaDB 5.1.44.

From the MariaDB 5.1.44b Release Notes:

MariaDB 5.1.44b fixes a buffer overflow that might potentially allow an authenticated user to run arbitrary code inside the server. It also has a fix for MySQL Bug #53371: “Security hole with bypassing grants using special path in db/table names.” In all other respects, it is the same as MariaDB 5.1.44.
