The Perfect Server - CentOS 7 x86_64 (nginx, Dovecot, ISPConfig 3)

This tutorial shows how to prepare a CentOS 7 x86_64 server for the installation of ISPConfig 3, and how to install ISPConfig 3 on it. ISPConfig 3 is a webhosting control panel that allows you to configure the following services through a web browser: nginx web server, Postfix mail server, MySQL, BIND nameserver, PureFTPd, SpamAssassin, ClamAV, Mailman, and many more. Since version 3.0.4, ISPConfig comes with full support for the nginx web server in addition to Apache; this tutorial covers the setup of a server that uses nginx, not Apache. I'm happy to announce the release of mylvmbackup version 0.16. The source package is now available for download from http://lenzg.net/mylvmbackup/ and https://launchpad.net/mylvmbackup.

Installation packages for a number of platforms can be obtained from the openSUSE Build Service.

Version 0.16 adds support for sending out SNMP traps in case of backup successes or failures. I'd like to thank Alexandre Anriot for contributing this new feature and his patience with me.

When running logrotate for MySQL (after proper setting the /etc/logrotate.d/mysql conf file) from anacron, there’s a situation that you might potentially face if the user and password used to execute the “flush logs” command is stored in, for example, /root/.my.cnf file.

Ubuntu 14.10 LAMP server tutorial with Apache 2, PHP 5 and MySQL (MariaDB)

LAMP is short for Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP. This tutorial shows how you can install an Apache 2 webserver on an Ubuntu 14.10 server with PHP5 support (mod_php) and MySQL support. Additionally, I will install phpmyadmin to make MySQL administration easier. A LAMP setup is the perfect basis for CMS systems like Joomla, Wordpress or Drupal.

After some grueling IO testing on 7200rpm disks, I got my hands on some shiny new Samsung 840 SSDs and wanted to share the performance results in similar fashion.

Dell r630, E5-2630 v3 @ 2.40GHz (16 cores), 256GB RAM, Samsung 840 EV SSD 960GB.

Testing was sysbench, fileio-rndrw, async+direct io, 16 threads, 5.5TB RAID-6 using XFS mounted with noatime,inode64 and using the deadline scheduler.

Facebook recently made opensource, osquery. It gives you operating system data via SQL queries! Its very neat, and you can test this even on MacOSX (it works on that platform & Linux). It is by far the project with the most advanced functionality, linked here in this post.

I noticed that rather quickly, there was a PostgreSQL project, called pgosquery, based on Foreign Data Wrappers with a similar idea. (apparently it was written in less than 15 minutes; so a much lower learning curve than the regular MySQL storage engine interface)
