mylvmbackup 0.16 has been released

I'm happy to announce the release of mylvmbackup version 0.16. The source package is now available for download from http://lenzg.net/mylvmbackup/ and https://launchpad.net/mylvmbackup.

Installation packages for a number of platforms can be obtained from the openSUSE Build Service.

Version 0.16 adds support for sending out SNMP traps in case of backup successes or failures. I'd like to thank Alexandre Anriot for contributing this new feature and his patience with me.

Please see the ChangeLog and bzr …

new nagios / icinga plugin check_juniper_srx_ipsec_tunnel.pl

At the weekend I completed a new nagios / icinga plugin. The check_juniper_srx_ipsec_tunnel.pl plugin checks via SNMP the IPSec VPN / Tunnel State for a given VPN Gateway on a Juniper SRX gateway.

Usage: ./check_juniper_srx_ipsec_tunnel.pl -H <Juniper Hostname> -g <IPSec Tunnel Gateway> -C <SNMP Community>

You will find the plugin on my projects page

SNMP Traps into MySQL is Sublime

I use snmptrapd to catch SNMP traps and then put them into a MySQL database using a pretty generic trap handler. This gives me the opportunity to generate such useful information as: > SELECT HOUR(time) AS "hour", COUNT(*) AS "bounces" FROM snmptraps WHERE hostname = 'XXX' AND time > '2011-07-25' AND trap_oid = 'SNMPv2-MIB::snmpTrapOID.0 IF-MIB::linkDown' […]

My MySQL SNMP Agent

Back in February I wrote an article titled A Small Fix For mysql-agent. Since then we did a few more fixes to the agent and included a Bytes Behind Master (or BBM) chart. For those who can't wait to get their hands on the code, here's the current version: MySQL SNMP agent RPM. For those who'd like to learn about it's capabilities and issues, keep reading.

What to Expect From this Version
The article I quoted above pretty much describes the main differences with the original project, but we went further with the changes while still relying on Masterzen's code for the data collection piece.

The first big change is that we transformed Masterzen's code into a Perl module, …

A Small Fix For mysql-agent

If you're already using an SNMP monitoring tool like OpenNMS, mysql-agent is a great way to add a number of graphics using Net-SNMP. However mysql-agent has a small bug that drove me crazy. I will try to highlight the process on how I discovered it (and hence fix it) since it involved learning about SNMP, how to diagnose it and eventually, once all the pieces came together, how simple it is to write your own agents.

Although versions are not that important, just for the sake of completeness we were using CentOS 5.5, MySQL 5.5.8 Community RPMs, Net SNMP version 5.3.22 and OpenNMS Web Console 1.8.7.

The Problem
I …

Using NDBINFO – example of monitoring data nodes with MySQL Enterprise Monitor

You may have read Bernd’s recent post that explained how to try out some new beta functionality for MySQL Cluster and wondered what kind of use you could put the new ndb$info to. ndb$info uses tables/views to give real-time access to a whole host of information that helps you monitor and tune your MySQL Cluster deployment. This article gives one example, extending MySQL Enterprise Monitor to keep an eye on the amount of free memory on the data nodes and then raise an alarm when it starts to run low – even generating SNMP traps if that’s what you need.

One of the features of MySQL Enterprise Monitor is that you can define custom data collectors and that those data collectors can run SQL queries to get the data. The information …

mysql-snmp 1.0 – SNMP monitoring for MySQL

I’m really proud to announce the release of the version 1.0 of mysql-snmp.

What is mysql-snmp?

mysql-snmp is a mix between the excellent MySQL Cacti Templates and a Net-SNMP agent. The idea is that combining the power of the MySQL Cacti Templates and any SNMP based monitoring would unleash a powerful mysql monitoring system. Of course this project favorite monitoring system is OpenNMS.

mysql-snmp is shipped with the necessary OpenNMS configuration files, but any other SNMP monitoring software can …

Monitoring MySQL with SNMP

A nice write up here: http://www.masterzen.fr/2009/04/13/introducing-mysql-snmp/ “It’s a Net-SNMP perl subagent that connects to your MySQL server, and reports various statistics (from show status or show innodb status, or even replication) through SNMP.”

This might find its way into Kontrollbase soon…
