The MySQL Connect content catalog is published, and I’ll be leading a hands-on lab on MySQL Enterprise Features in Practice [HOL9787]. If you have wondered how to get the most out of the features of MySQL Enterprise subscriptions – whether you are an existing Enterprise customer or not – this lab is for you. We’ll help you understand the benefits of the various components of the MySQL Enterprise subscription as you install, configure, demonstrate and use the …
[Read more]The sessions for this year’s MySQL Connect conference have now been scheduled – as you can see below, my 2 MySQL Cluster sessions will be on Saturday 21st September at 11:30 and 14:30 (Pacific).
The MySQL Connect conference is a great opportunity to listen to and chat with people from the MySQL community – including the engineers who work on or around MySQL as well people who are using it in production. The conference takes place from 21-23 September in San Francisco (runs up to Oracle OpenWorld). There are 84 sessions scheduled and the content catalog has now been published.

[Read more]I registered yesterday for Oracle OpenWorld 2013, and I’ll look forward to seeing friends there. Having worked in the Oracle 12c beta for a year, I’ll be interested in the presentations. Also, hearing more about Java 7 at JavaOne. On the downside, I’m missing MySQL Connect this year.
Cloud computing offers many possibilities, and container and pluggable databases are a great solution. We’ve two new acronyms with the Oracle 12c release. A containerized database is a CDB, and a pluggable database is a PDB. I’m looking forward to seeing more about the provisioning of PDBs during the conference. If you’re new to the changes, check out CDBs and PDBs in Chapter 17 in the …

The Call for Papers for MySQL Connect 2013 will close this Friday. This is the premier Oracle-sponsored MySQL conference, and a great opportunity for community users and customers alike to connect with Oracle staff from engineering, support, consulting and other organizations, as well as community partners and peers. Maybe you’d like to talk about your experiences integrating one of the new MySQL 5.6 features. Or maybe you’d like to share best practices you’ve developed for integrating with Hadoop. Perhaps you’ve extended MySQL and want to tell the community about it. Take advantage of this opportunity and submit your proposal this week!
It's the end of the year and, before the world ends ;-) , I feel the pressure
to follow up on last year's article "2011, a great year for MySQL in Review". I'll
adopt a similar format and mention things in context, covering
products, marketing, momentum, etc. at a high level. I may have
missed something and I hope my colleagues will contribute to the
list.
I really do think it's been the best year for MySQL so far...
well, at least since when I signed my contract with MySQL AB at
the end of 2007. We're just at the beginning of our journey and I
wish to the MySQL family, to our community and ecosystem an even
better 2013!

I’m just attending MySQL Connect (thanks Dave for the ticket) and I’m speaking in New York so will take the redeye on Sunday. Four packed days of MySQL/MariaDB/Percona/tools/etc. across two coasts. Who can pass this up?

In this presentation, learn about the issues of managing a large
number of instances of MySQL, supporting 50 billion SQL
statements per day. Topics covered:
• The need for monitoring and instrumentation
• How to automate installations, upgrades, and deployments
• Issues with MySQL’s Replication feature with 300 slaves per
master
• Traffic minimization techniques
• Creating high availability with regions and zones
• Real-time traffic stats (aggregated every five seconds)

Solving the Challenges of Big Databases with MySQL
When you’re using MySQL for big data (more than ten times as large as main memory), these challenges often arise: loading data fast; maintaining indexes under insertions deletions, and updates; adding and removing columns online; adding indexes online; preventing slave lag; and compressing data effectively.
This session shows why some of these challenges are difficult to solve with storage engines based on B-trees, how Fractal Tree® data structures work, and why they can help solve these problems. Tokutek sells a transaction-safe Fractal Tree storage engine for MySQL, but the presentation is primarily about the underlying technology. It includes a discussion of both the theoretical and practical aspects of Fractal Tree indexes.
I have the privilege of being able to give this talk at both conferences, so please stop by my presentation at …
