Standing at the sidelines, a few people have asked about my
opinion regarding Monty Widenius leaving Sun... And I suppose I
probably should offer an opinion about Mårten Mickos departing too.
The big three at MySQL AB... Monty, Mårten and David. None of
them are with Sun anymore.
Does that mean the end of MySQL? Certainly not. There is far too
much momentum in the community for it to simply disappear
overnight.
Of the three... I guess I was a little surprised when David left
Sun first. I had imagined that Sun would make space for him in
their organization, especially for his campaigning for FOSS in
government and to continue MySQL's Anti-Patent pledge.
Monty... I'd like to say that I was surprised but to be honest, I
knew that he would leave. It was more a matter of …

Kudos to Colin Charles, who has the not easy task of being the program chair of the conference, for pulling the schedule together.
The schedule is not complete yet. If you haven't got either an approval or a rejection, your proposal is still under review. In the previous years, some of my talks were approved as late as February, but we are trying to finish off the schedule much earlier this time.
This is my last blog post for this year. I am going on vacation this evening. No computers, no internet. Therefore, no comments are enabled for this post (there would be nobody to moderate and approve them).

Another approval has arrived. I will be co-presenting a tutorial at the MySQL Users Conference 2009. Partitioning in MySQL 5.1. My co-speaker is Sarah Sproehnle, a well known MySQL trainer. The topic is one of the flagship features of MySQL 5.1. |

being developed.

We are almost there. Four days more, and then it's over. The CfP for the MySQL Users Conference 2009 ends on November 5th, 2008.
We have already received more proposals than we got last year, and (yes!) many of them are innovative.

OK. I was exceedingly optimistic, but not too much. I said that we may get enough submissions by the end of the regular CfP, and I was almost right. At midnight of October 22nd, we got 284 submissions, which is about 100 proposals more than last year (before extending), but not as much as we got after the extension. Well done, MySQL Community! But since we are hard to please, we want to have at least the same number of proposals that we had last year (I am sure we'll get more!), and so we are extending for two weeks. Still 5 days until the end of the call for participation. Hurry up! The deadline is October 22, 2008. Yes. I know what you are thinking. Every year it's hurry hurry and then they extend at the last minute. Probably so. Or maybe not. After my last reminder, the number and the quality of submissions has improved. And we may manage to get what we want without extensions. If that happens, your only chance for a podium is to submit before October 22nd. |
