My 2 cents...

Standing at the sidelines, a few people have asked about my opinion regarding Monty Widenius leaving Sun... And I suppose I probably should offer an opinion about Mårten Mickos departing too.

The big three at MySQL AB... Monty, Mårten and David. None of them are with Sun anymore.
Does that mean the end of MySQL? Certainly not. There is far too much momentum in the community for it to simply disappear overnight.

Of the three... I guess I was a little surprised when David left Sun first. I had imagined that Sun would make space for him in their organization, especially for his campaigning for FOSS in government and to continue MySQL's Anti-Patent pledge.

Monty... I'd like to say that I was surprised but to be honest, I knew that he would leave. It was more a matter of …

Table functions in MySQL

Less than 48 hours after starting to scratch this itch, I have table functions working in my WL820 repository on Launchpad. It is pretty nifty:mysql> INSTALL PLUGIN Deep_Thought SONAME 'psm_example.so';Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.10 sec)mysql> CREATE FUNCTION test.FooAnswer() -> RETURNS TABLE(answer TEXT) -> NO SQL LANGUAGE Deep_Thought EXTERNAL NAME 'compute';Query OK, 0 rows affected (

Registration for MySQL Conference and Expo 2009 is now open

Registration is open for the MySQL Users Conference and Expo 2009. The review committee had 350 proposals to choose from, and most of the schedule is already done.

The tutorials section is complete, with a juicy choice of topics from popular classics to the newest ones, all of them with some innovative contents, as the theme Innovation Everywhere requires.

Register before February 16, and save as …

Registration for the MySQL Conference and Expo 2009 now open

Registration for the MySQL Conference and expo 2009 is now open.

Kudos to Colin Charles, who has the not easy task of being the program chair of the conference, for pulling the schedule together.

The schedule is not complete yet. If you haven't got either an approval or a rejection, your proposal is still under review. In the previous years, some of my talks were approved as late as February, but we are trying to finish off the schedule much earlier this time.

This is my last blog post for this year. I am going on vacation this evening. No computers, no internet. Therefore, no comments are enabled for this post (there would be nobody to moderate and approve them).

Happy new year, Community!

Tutorial on Partitioning at the MySQL Users Conference 2009

Another approval has arrived. I will be co-presenting a tutorial at the MySQL Users Conference 2009.
Partitioning in MySQL 5.1. My co-speaker is Sarah Sproehnle, a well known MySQL trainer. The topic is one of the flagship features of MySQL 5.1.

The tutorial will cover the basics, several practical scenarios, tips and tricks, and some sneak peeks of the latest enhancements being developed.

Speaking about the Event Scheduler at the Users Conference 2009

The approvals are coming. I will be speaking at the MySQL Users Conference 2009.
Using the event scheduler. The friendly behind-the-scenes helper. My co-speaker will be none other than Andrey Hristov, the designer and implementer of the Event scheduler, one of the main features of MySQL 5.1.
UC2009 - A few days, a few wishes

We are almost there. Four days more, and then it's over. The CfP for the MySQL Users Conference 2009 ends on November 5th, 2008.

We have already received more proposals than we got last year, and (yes!) many of them are innovative.

Thanks to all the submitters.

I have still a few wishes, though.

There are still no proposals or very little on

  • The event scheduler
  • OpenOffice integration
  • Java
  • The plugin architecture
  • MySQL Proxy

If you have a technical story to tell about one of the subjects above, don't be shy, and come forward!

And of course, if you have some innovative ideas on any topic related to MySQL, feel free to submit a proposal.

UC2009 proposals, wow! A near miss

OK. I was exceedingly optimistic, but not too much. I said that we may get enough submissions by the end of the regular CfP, and I was almost right. At midnight of October 22nd, we got 284 submissions, which is about 100 proposals more than last year (before extending), but not as much as we got after the extension.

Well done, MySQL Community!

But since we are hard to please, we want to have at least the same number of proposals that we had last year (I am sure we'll get more!), and so we are extending for two weeks. You have time until November 5th to submit a …

MySQL Users Conference and Expo 2009 : CfP -5 days!

Still 5 days until the end of the call for participation.

Hurry up! The deadline is October 22, 2008.

Yes. I know what you are thinking. Every year it's hurry hurry and then they extend at the last minute.

Probably so. Or maybe not. After my last reminder, the number and the quality of submissions has improved. And we may manage to get what we want without extensions. If that happens, your only chance for a podium is to submit before October 22nd.

If we get enough good submissions by them, we won't extend. Meaning that if you were counting on an extension to send your proposal, it may be too late.

Of …

MySQL UC2009 - Little innovation so far

MySQL Community, I am disappointed.

Innovation Everywhere is the theme of the Users Conference and Expo 2009, and yet, in the proposals that I have received so far I have seen very little innovation. Few daring technical proposals. Few accounts of truly novel exploits.

Instead, I've seen very similar topics to past years, without the spark of experimentation that we look for as an extra spice for the year where the topic is Innovation.

If I look at Planet MySQL, I see plenty of movement. New projects, new releases of old projects, people trying exciting technologies, others combining old technologies with new platforms. And yet, some of the people who are posting these exciting news are …
