Speaking at the MySQL London Meetup

We have two engineers from SkySQL who will be talking at the MySQL London Meetup on the 18th July and we welcome anyone who wants to chat to us to sign-up and come along.

I (Andrew Hutchings) will be giving a talk on Drizzle (a database server that originated as a fork of MySQL) and mydumper (a multi-threaded, high-performance dump/restore toolset for MySQL).

We also have Mark Riddoch coming along to talk about the work on our Reference Architecture toolset.

There will also be other representatives of SkySQL there and we will be hanging around in the pub afterwards to talk about anything in the MySQL ecosystem.

mydumper, now with continuous backup mode!

It has happened to the best of us.  Our MySQL servers are running nicely when the tea-lady in the data centre trips over a wire, knocks a cup hot of java down the UPS batteries and fries every server in the data centre.  OK, so that doesn't happen very often, but there have been cases where data centre failures have physically damaged servers.

So, if this happens with your MySQL server, what do you do?  You can setup new servers in a new data centre and hope you have an up-to-date backup.  But unless you had remote slaves these backups probably won't be as current as they could be.  When you get to the point where you have many servers keeping slaves for every one just for backups can be difficult to maintain.  Many DBAs have different backup strategies to cover this potential problem.

This is where the new mydumper 0.5.0 comes in. …

CEO Up-date: Happy “Half Birthday” SkySQL!

Recently, we celebrated SkySQL reaching its first, “half birthday” since its official launch on October 15th. It’s been an amazing half-year. While most “newborns” are still getting a feel for the lay of the land at 6 months, SkySQL is already off and running!

Keeping to the high level corporate strategy we set in place when we dreamed-up SkySQL last summer, we have worked hard to establish a presence in the MySQL™ database ecosystem and to drive awareness amongst customers/users. Our goal continues to be for SkySQL to become the first and obvious choice for affordable MySQL database solutions for the enterprise and cloud. In our first six months, we:

  • Grew the company to nearly 40 employees, working out of 14 countries, ensuring that we’re able to deliver our expert MySQL database services and support wherever our customers are located;
  • Extended our global reach …

The SkySQL Reference Architecture

I have a bunch of notes from the O’Reilly MySQL Conference & Expo 2011, and I figure its about time I started blogging it. These are notes from the panel on the SkySQL Reference Architecture, led by Kaj Arno and Ivan Zoratti. The notes are raw (read their FAQ for more), and I talk a little bit about the SkySQL Configurator at the end (a tool I immediately used, and submitted some bugs/improvements for – 7 at last count, which I hear got fixed in the 0.02 release, which got pushed last night!).

There were 7 panelists. The MySQL world needs:

  • technical support
  • monitoring & administration tools

SkySQL Roadshows – Seoul & Tokyo

A lot is happening in the world of MySQL lately. If you’re in Asia, SkySQL has been organising roadshows. On May 18, there was a captive audience in Singapore, listening to David Axmark (advisor to SkySQL, co-founder of MySQL Ab), Daniel Saito (SkySQL), and Colin Charles (Monty Program). On May 20, there was a huge audience in Manila, and I was totally bummed to have missed out on it.

I’m told there’s going to be an awesome audience tomorrow, May 27, in Seoul, South Korea. Lotte Hotel will be abuzz with all things SkySQL, Monty Program, and MariaDB, and it will feature Kaj Arno and Daniel Saito from SkySQL, and Colin Charles from Monty Program.

May 30 brings upon the SkySQL Roadshow in Tokyo, hosted at the Yurakucho International Forum.

If you plan to attend any of these events (Daniel tells me they’re also reaching capacity) and are in the area, don’t …
