Clustered computing brings with it many benefits: high
performance, high availability, scalable infrastructure,
etc. But it also brings with it more complexity.
Why ? Well, by its very nature, there are more "moving
parts" to monitor and manage (from physical, virtual and logical
hosts) to fault detection and failover software to redundant
networking components - the list goes on. And a cluster
that isn't effectively provisioned and managed will cause more
downtime than the standalone systems it is designed to improve
upon. Not so great....
When it comes to the database industry, analysts already estimate
that 50% of a typical database's Total Cost of Ownership is
attributable to staffing and downtime costs. These costs
will only increase if a database cluster is to hard to properly
administer.
Over the past 9 months, monitoring and management has been a

The convergence of telecommunications onto IP (Internet Protocol)
based networks is revolutionizing today's communications
industry. Communications Service Providers (CSPs) are challenged
to deliver compelling new personalized services with greater
agility and lower costs than ever before.
Whether they are looking to deploy new Web/Telco 2.0 applications
to mobile Internet users or consolidating subscriber data within
the network to support greater service personalization and
targeted communications, the database plays a key role in
enabling new services.
We believe MySQL is pretty much unique in the industry by
providing the insight and experience to marry the innovation and
speed of the Web with the proven capabilities of the carrier
network. MySQL is deployed in 9 of the top 10 most trafficked
sites on the web [1] including Google, Facebook and
YouTube. MySQL is also extensively deployed in the network
domain, …
The binary version for MySQL Cluster 7.1.9 has now been made available at http://www.mysql.com/downloads/cluster/
A description of all of the changes (fixes) that have gone into MySQL Cluster 7.1.9 (compared to 7.1.8) can be found in the official MySQL Cluster documentation. In addition, there is a great BLOG posting from Johan Anderson explaining how to use the new table added to ndbinfo to tune DiskPageBufferMemory when storing tables on disk.

The UK Oracle User Group Conference runs from 29th November through 1st December 2010 – the MySQL content is on Wednesday 1st at the ICC in Birmingham. This is a great chance for MySQL users to find out more on the latest developments and question some of the experts (both from inside and outside Oracle) and for Oracle users who don’t have experience with MySQL to discover what it’s all about.
The day starts with a keynote from Rich Mason (VP responsible for MySQL sales) at 8:45; I’ll be part of a …
[Read more]The confusion about whether MySQL Community Edition still included InnoDB seems now to have dissipated. Thank you to Sheeri Cabral, Darren Cassar and all of you who helped correct the misperception created by catchy headlines. In part, the confusion was caused by people assuming that the MySQL Classic Edition (an option for embedding that has been around for a long time) is the same as MySQL Community Edition...not so. We have made appropriate changes to our web page to …
[Read more]MySQL Enterprise Monitor with MySQL Cluster
A few months ago, I posted a walkthrough of how to extend MySQL Enterprise Monitor in order to monitor MySQL Cluster. The great news is that as of MySQL Enterprise Monitor 2.3 (available from Oracle E-Delivery since 1st November) this functionality is included in the core product and so there is no need to add the extra features in manually. Of course, that post might still be of interest if you want to further extend MySQL Enterprise Monitor.
This post briefly steps through the new (Cluster-specific) functionality but if you’re interested, why not try it for yourself and download the new …
