It's almost two weeks now since FrOSCon and the OpenSQL Camp subconference have taken place in Sankt Augustin, Germany — about time for a summary and update from my side!

Last weekend, my brother and I attended SELF 2009. A few thoughts on it:

The mixture of sessions was interesting. There were some really good ones. I think the best session I attended was an OpenSolaris/NetBeans/Glassfish/Virtualbox/ZFS session, given by a Sun employee. He was an excellent presenter, and really showed off the strengths of the technologies in a nice way. He started up enough VMs to make his OpenSolaris laptop chew into swap, and I thought it was fun to see how it dealt with that. I’ve heard Solaris and OpenSolaris do a lot better at avoiding and managing swapping than GNU/Linux, but I couldn’t make any opinion from watching. I did think it was odd to have this session at a “Linux” (yes, they left off the GNU) conference. But I thought the session was a good addition to the conference. I recently presented DTrace at Sun's CommunityONE event. My presentation was focused on observing drupal using DTrace. You can see a replay of the presentation here. You can get the presentation here as well.

If you are an AMP (Apache MySQL PHP) stack user on Solaris/OpenSolaris you can benefit from DTrace. Here is a D-Script that will print the load distribution on your system. Think of it as "AMP-top" if you may! This was tested on OpenSolaris 2009.06

One of the things I really like about Solaris (and OpenSolaris) is the Services Management Framework (SMF). And one of the things I like about my job is the opportunity to learn and work with new stuff. And, of course, the best way to learn something "non-lethal" is to try it yourself and do something with it.
So, how about using SMF for managing a MySQL Cluster setup? Something simple like two data nodes, one mgmt node, and one MySQL server node running on one OS instance? Sounds like a good exercise and, from a quick search, I couldn't find where it had been done before. Up until now, I've been working with Fedora AMIs in my quest to master working with virtual servers on AWS. Today I jumped over to an OpenSolaris AMI.

I love it! The pkg command makes things very easy.

So far installing things like Ant, JDK, and MySQL have gone perfectly. I'll write more as I learn.

My last post about Basic MySQL Security generated a number of interesting comments, thanks for all your feedback! I'd like to address a few points that were mentioned there:

While the problem seems to be a non-issue on Linux, Keith Murphy stated that the password might still be visible on other Unix operating systems (e.g. Solaris), as described in Bug#11952 in our bug database. According to the bug report, it depends on the implementation of "ps" — there seems to be a BSD variant (/usr/ucb/ps) as well as a SysV implementation (/usr/bin/ps).
