How I stopped worrying and learned to love Twitter

I was warned by my brother a while ago that should I start tweeting, he would stage an intervention. I had already confessed to accounts with facebook, multiply, myspace, and several others (disclaimer/explanation: all of those sites are customers of my longtime employer). Twitter, to the uninitiated, looks like the crack cocaine of social networking that turns the weekend photo-poster into a hardcore jittering lifecaster. Nobody wants to see their family member come to that, right? But follow along, twitter has purpose. Or just skip to the bottom.

I was never an active friendster user. The first site I used …

The Embedded Reporter in the Half-Marathon

The MySQL Runners Club meets whenever running MySQLers meet. Sun Microsystems GmbH here in Germany also has something similar — and a good week ago, a group of Sunnies teamed up for the 31. Münchner Stadtlauf half marathon. I decided to make myself an embedded reporter, combining Twitter, Flip Mino, YouTube and a bit of surplus electronics and Web 2.0 media.

What’s the result? 37 Tweets, an almost 10 minute YouTube video and, surprisingly, a new personal record (1:44:06).

You’ll see a bit more in the video. Sure, both voice and text are in German — but you’ll get …

The Call for Papers for the OpenSQLCamp 2009 is now open!

The OpenSQL Camp 2009 web site is now ready for business, I've updated various pages and added some more information about the call for papers. I've also set up a Twitter account (no way without one nowadays, right?), which might also play an important role in the voting/rating of talks later on (Giuseppe came up with an interesting proposal for that).

So we're now seeking your input! Let me quote from the web pages directly:

OpenSQL Camp is a free conference of, by, and for the open-source database community of users and developers. The first OpenSQLCamp 2008 took place in Charlottesville, Virginia, …

Leveraging the power of Twitter

Last week I posted the following twitter request“Can somebody loan me (or buy me) a Dell 2950 decked out so I can run and publish some benchmarks. Please!”

In a same day response I was offered access to use 2 x Dell 1950’s, and today I’m now actually using these machines for my own testing. I would like to thank cafemom (Barry, Anthony & Dan) for the loan of hardware.

And now the chance to better understand the RAID configuration of the DELL PERC Controllers, trying out some different RAID types, LVM configurations and disk tests. When I’m done with my System Administrator refresher, I’m then be trying some different MySQL Benchmarks to test various MySQL configuration settings including using the new Juice

Redefining Spam, in the age of Twitter

For the past few months, I’ve been helping my friend develop and market Philtro .
We’ve gone through various iterations of the elevator pitch for it, and the one that seems to be kinda working, is: “It’s like a spam filter for your Twitter account.”

At SXSW, I got the opportunity to talk to Guy Kawasaki about this tool, and he said “There is no spam on twitter, if you don’t like it, don’t follow them”.

While that’s an easy way to handle spam, I also realized that the word Spam means different things to different people.

On Twitter, nothing is UCE. It’s easy to block the profiles with …

Velocity Preview - Keeping Twitter Tweeting

If there's a site that exemplifies explosive growth, it has to be Twitter. It seems like everywhere you look, someone is Tweeting, or talking about Tweeting, or Tweeting about Tweeting. Keeping the site responsive under that type of increase is no easy job, but it's one that John Adams has to deal with every day, working in Twitter Operations. He'll be talking about that work at O'Reilly's Velocity Conference, in a session entitled Fixing Twitter: Improving the Performance and Scalability of the World's Most Popular Micro-blogging Site, and he spent some time with us to talk about what is involved in keeping the site alive.

James Turner: Can you start by describing the platforms and technologies that make Twitter run …

TwitterJobSearch, MySQL Job Fair

I heard about TwitterJobSearch on net@night, and decided to give it a twirl. I typed “mysql” and found 3,092 results in 30 seconds. You can then filter by job title, salary, skill set, job type, and more, as well as sort it by relevance or date.

Useful? Quite possibly. Would be more useful, if you could filter out Twitter users (like @itcareer, for example). Search that is semantic, instead of just word based. So “mysql in san francisco” will return relevant results for you.

If you’re looking for a job anytime soon, note that there will also be a Job Fair at the MySQL Conference & Expo 2009, happening April 20-23 2009, are you registered yet? Its a great place to network, and you shouldn’t miss it.
