I arrived in Athens shortly before midnight. An unusual sight.
Most of the taxi drivers in the queue are female. My driver is a
middle aged woman wearing a torn leather jacket and with no
understanding of English beyond numbers. She said "yes. Liberian
hotel", and she adds the name of a mysterious location that I
don't understand. I show her the hotel name and address, written
in both Latin and Greek alphabet. "Yes. Iberian hotel. I know
where." "Not Iberian - I say patiently, pointing at the hotel
name on the paper - Imperial.
She says yes, and off we go.
After a minute she fishes a cell phone from her jacket, and asks
something. It's a flurry of incomprehensible Greek, but the hotel
name I hear very clearly "yadda yadda yadda Liberia hotel yadda
yadda". I lean forward and I repeat "Not Liberia. Imperial".
"yes, she says. Iberia".
I tell her to stop the taxi. I show her again the name of the
hotel, "Imperial," and the place where …
As usual, the MySQL Users Conference and Expo includes Birds of a Feather (BoF) sessions. For the uninitiated, a BoF is an informal discussion group about a common topic. There is no registration and no fee for a BoF. You can organize one even if you don't plan to attend the main event. If your BoF is accepted and scheduled, you can organize it as you like. You won't get a free pass for a BoF, though. We provide the rooms. You bring in the ideas. Submit a BoF proposal! … |

Shortly after I blogged about my upcoming talks and events, I got informed that one of my session proposals for the next09 conference was accepted. This event will take place in Hamburg, Germany on Tuesday and Wednesday (5th and 6th of May), so at least there isn't much travel involved.
My talk about "Working for a Virtual Company: How we do it at MySQL" has been scheduled for 9:00 am on Wednesday morning, parallel to a keynote by Brian Solis from FutureWorks. I'm not sure how many people will actually show up, but I look forward to giving a talk about a less …
[Read more]My calendar for the upcoming months is already filling up with conferences, trade fairs and other events at which I'll speak about MySQL. Here's a quick overview:
