Speaking at FOSDEM

I am getting ready to FOSDEM, the biggest European gathering of free and open source software enthusiasts. The event is held in Brussels, Belgium, on February 7-8, 2009.

MySQL has a developers room on Sunday, with a schedule rich of well known names and juicy topics.

I will present a talk about partitions in MySQL 5.1.

Lenz will have a talk in the main conference, on MySQL high availability.

There is a wiki page on MySQL Forge where we will provide last minute information.

Issues Booking the MySQL 2009 Conference Hotel

So, a colleague ran into issues booking the Santa Clara Hyatt Regency Hotel—apparently there were no rooms with 2 double beds left for the MySQL 2009 Conference and Expo.

I could not imagine that the conference hotel would sell out so quickly!

The conference’s travel/hotel web page links directly to the online reservations page at http://santaclara.hyatt.com/groupbooking/clara2009orea.

I went there and did a little detective work. What I found was:

  • When I chose Mon Apr 20 - Thu Apr 23, there were rooms with 2 double beds available.
  • When I chose Sun Apr 19 - Thu Apr 23, there were rooms with 2 double beds available.
  • When I chose Sat Apr 18 - Thu Apr 23, there were rooms with 2 double beds available. …

MySQL Users Conference with embedded MySQLCamp

Well, I announced it a few months ago, and now Sheeri made it happen. The MySQL Users Conference and Expo 2009 will have a MySQL Camp embedded.

What is it? Asked most of the people I know, including many colleagues, some of them worried that I was giving away the company jewels.

For starters, it is not a competitor of the Users Conference. It won't duplicate its contents, nor is a way of sneaking into the main conference without a pass. It is a camp, and if you have attended either one of the previous MySQL Camps or the OpenSQLCamp, you know what I mean.

MySQL Unconference is MySQL Camp….

Yesterday I announced the MySQL Unconference. Some folks have asked about the MySQL Camp that both Giuseppe and I previously announced.

They are one and the same. In order to minimize confusion, I’ll change things to say “MySQL Camp” instead of “Unconference”. Apologies to those who were confused!

The grand scale details:

3rd Gestionale Open Developer Conference

On January the 9th, 2009 I've presented at the 3rd Annual Gestionale Open Developer Conference.

Gestionale Open is an open source ERP gathering interest in Italy, since it is compliant with local laws. This project has been started years ago by an entrepreneur with decades of experience in the field and now it's used by 100s of customers. They have concluded the porting to MySQL, which is now the default database for the product!

There were nearly 100 participants. Gestionale Open has catalyzed the interest of customers, distributors, software developers. It's nice to see complex business applications moving to open source.

The title of my presentation was: "Enterprise Innovation". I've chosen a banal title, but wishing to make an interesting dissertation on why MySQL is fuelling the innovation and who is using MySQL to seed projects and evolve from simple ideas to real business.
