We've set up a Wiki page that outlines the various stations of our journey. At the Moment, we will visit the following cities:

What I have been doing lately in slides, pictures and videos

I just realized that I haven't blogged for more than a month! Shame on me. But I will blame it on being away on conferences and vacation for quite some time And if you are following me on twitter, you may have noticed what I was going on in my life and that I did't get hit by a bus...

So what was going on since I returned back home from the MySQL Conference? First off, I uploaded und sorted my pictures from the conference and the Drizzle developer day on Flickr. I also uploaded the slides (PDF) from Colin and myself speaking about "MySQL Server Backup, …

6 Tips for a Smooth Zimbra Server Install

It may sound odd offering more Zimbra installation advice since there is a lot on the subject in other blogs, our documents, wiki and Forums. In fact, some quick research surfaced over 1.4 million hits for Zimbra server install on the web and 36,000 on the Zimbra site alone.

But we are also fortunate to have more new Zimbra users than ever, and after helping some trial customers recently, it …

MySQL Workbench 5.2 Querying Quick-Tour

For anybody interested in trying out our new MySQL Workbench 5.2 Alpha2 I have prepared a short Quick-Tour that will show you the most important steps to successfully use WB to query your databases.

Manage Your Connections

MySQL Workbench 5.2 introduces a new Home Page that makes it very easy to access all your Database Connections and EER Models. It features the Workbench Central Panel, the Database Connections Panel and the Model Files Panel.

In order to be able to connect to your  MySQL server you have to create a new Database Connection so MySQL Workbench knows about your server instance. Follow the steps shown below to create your first Database Connection.

Click on the screen shot to see it at full size.

Connecting to and Working with the MySQL Server

Once you have created your …

Hello, MySQL 6.0, err, something

I'm conflicted about the latest twist of the MySQL release saga, ie the announcement of the 6.0.11 alpha version and the accompanying note that it's the last 6.0 release and will be replaced by the already discussed milestone model. From an engineering point of view, I think this is the right step. I'm not sure about that, because I can't really tell exactly what is the engineering model chosen: trunk-first, then backport, or fix-in-releases, then forward port. I also can't tell whether the milestone model is going to be timeboxed or feature-scoped. Personally, I would prefer to see the former of both alternatives.

From a customer point of view, I'm even more confused, though much less concerned. Okay, so 6.0 won't become the marketing version number of any MySQL Enterprise release? Doesn't …

Open Development vs Making a Big Splash

I find it very interesting how Sun does not get the very basic principle of true community Open Source development - you've got to give up on making a big splash.

Traditional close source company often develop product in the secret and when it comes out as a surprise for computers and making a big splash for the users. Does it remind you something ? Yes! this is exactly how Innodb Plugin was released last year or MySQL 5.4 performance improvements this year.

Community did not know about them and did not participate early in this efforts.

Another big splash which seems to be planned later this year is "Performance Schema" - which is in development for years as this post claims but to date there is no code for community to play with

I …

MySQL Pays attention to Bugs (Finally!)

I should say I can see results of new engineering/refactoring/bug hunt efforts inside Sun/MySQL.
Over last couple of weeks I started getting a lot of messages from the bugs system about bugs I reported long ago which were deferred to be fixed later or were left in open state. Here is example of such a bug.

I really hope this effort will result in a lot of these old annoyances fixed, which really matches my vision for MySQL - we do not need more big features we need old ones to work well and be convenient.

MySQL Workbench speaks SQLite

As many of you already know, MySQL Workbench offers powerful scripting support and a plugin interface that allows anybody to extend the application or add new functionality.

The latest addition to the WB plugin family has been written by Thomas Henlich. It features SQLite compatible SQL export of your Workbench models.

Download it from his blog and please provide feedback on the forums.

We are working on improving the scripting support in WB 5.2 and finally adding proper documentation so even more people can contribute.

MySQL Meetups Sponsorship Available

As you know Sun/MySQL and MeetUp.com could not agree on terms of the sponsorship and so now all MySQL meetup organizers have to pay for their Meetups or move them to the different location. Facebook is suggested as one of alternatives.

I'm not to take any sides in this story and judge who is wrong and who is right but I think it is quite a bad situation to be forced to move off meetup with just a 7 days notice. It may be good idea to host communities in the space which does not make organizers dependent on the sponsor but I think Meetup organizers deserve more time to arrange the move.

We spoke with Jeremy Cole and agreed it will be a good idea to offer the sponsorship MySQL Meetup organizers looking to stick with Meetup.com a little longer. You can read Jeremy's posts on the same matter …
