Nostalgia isn't what it used to be

My parents had found a box of old stuff which they delivered to me and I went through yesterday. For instance, did you know that I appeared on a photo of Kellogs Frosties (with Tony the Tiger) in 1995! We have several of those boxes still saved, empty of course. No, I'm not a celebrity. I was in the audience of a hockey game in Lillehammer Olympics which they used on their boxes in 1995. All the more memorable then, since 1995 is still the one and only year that Finland won the World Championships!

Power-Efficiency Study For MySQL Database Server

Introduction

The purpose of this document is to explain the power-efficeincy analysis proess, power-efficiency issues and solutions in MySQL database server as an example to help identify the right tools and procedures that support the development of energy-efficient application.

Analysis Process

  1. Install and start test application(MySQL) on idle system, create workload to simulate the scenario that multiple concurrent clients connecting to the MySQL server without executing any queries.

  2. Run PowerTop on Solaris to see how much time the CPUs are spending running in lower power states, and how much time the CPU are spending running in C0 state(meaning CPU is actually executing instructions.)

  3. Use DTrace to profile application understand the source of the wakeups causing …

[5.1 UCC] A series of articles on MySQL™ version 5.1

Today (August 1st 2008) I started write a series of articles to be referenced in my MySQL™ 5.1 Use Case Report that I will submit later this month to the Community Team for the MySQL™ 5.1 Use Case Competition.

I guess UC Reports should contain real world use of MySQL™ 5.1. So if I am not mistaken you can submit a Report on partitioning, for instance, if you are using v. 5.1 because you need partitioning and you can include in your Report the reason you needed partitioning and a description of your development and deployment environment.

Now, I am not using Partitioning (or Events or Plugins) because I *need* partitioning in my production system for a specific reason. I am a developer so I developed software on those features ;-). So I will submit some posts about new features of the version 5.1 and let others decide if my stuff …

Vista™, Virtual Box, Solaris™ 10, MySQL™ Cluster

..aka how to spend a magnificent Sunday-Monday in SUN’s company :)

If your applications run on Windows™ and you need a MySQL™ Cluster for testing purposes you can use Virtual Box to install SUN Solaris™  10 and set up the Database Cluster creating 4 Solaris™ Zones (4 IP are required for a minimal Cluster setup).

It’s an interesting scenario.

You will need:

You can create the Solaris™ Zones manually or you can create them …

Andrii Nikiti’s son Needs Our Help

(Reposted from Zack Urlocker’s blog)

Andrii Nikitin, one of the MySQL support engineers located in Ukraine, has asked for help from MySQLers and so I’m sharing this information to the community at large. Andrii’s son Ivan, who is 2 1/2, is in need of a bone marrow transplant operation. This will require going to a clinic in Europe that will not be covered by regular insurance. So Andrii has aksed to see if we could help raise funds. The cost is expected to be 150,000 - 250,000 EUROS. A huge amount for an engineer from Ukraine to cover. But a small amount by many people could make a big difference.

Many MySQLers have kicked in to help out, but more is needed. Ivan’s health has taken a turn for the worse recently and the issue is now quite pressing. Even a small donation could mean the difference between life and death for Ivan.

I hope some of you who use MySQL or have young kids will join me in making a …

mylvmbackup 0.9 has been released

I am happy to announce that a new version (0.9) of mylvmbackup has been released. This is the first release since the source code has been moved from Subversion to Bazaar and is now hosted on Launchpad.net. I would like to thank Robin H. Johnson and Patrick Hahn for providing the patches that contributed to this new release!

mylvmbackup is a tool for quickly creating backups of MySQL server's data files. To perform a backup, mylvmbackup obtains a read lock on all tables and flushes all server caches to disk, makes an LVM snapshot of the volume containing the MySQL data directory, and unlocks the tables again. The snapshot process takes only a small amount of time. When it is done, the server can continue normal operations, while the actual file backup proceeds.
