Christmas party at the Widenius residence

Last Friday I got to enjoy the benefit of being a MySQL'r and located in Finland: We were invited to Monty, Anna and Maria for a MySQL Christmas party. Now that we are part of Sun, the company of course organises its own official Christmas party (who organises parties on a Thursday???) like all companies do, but a special MySQL party was still a very good idea, thanks Monty for inviting us. I especially enjoyed meeting some of the MySQL'rs who had recently either left Sun or happened to be on maternity leave.

First 1080p video from Canon’s new 5D MkII – Amazing!

My father and I got our 5D MkIIs on Friday and we could hardly wait for the batteries to charge. He took his to SF to test its vaunted low-light performance and posted this 60-second 1080p clip (along with other resolutions) on his SmugMug site: Click to watch it auto-sized for your monitor or check out the full 1080p resolution (caution – *high* bandwidth! UPDATE: Apologies if you tried to watch 1080p on Windows earlier. My bug made it look terrible. Try again, please?).

Here’s his story:

“I had seen Vincent Laforet’s amazing short film, but only in 720p. I knew what an amazing photographer he is and wondered how close an everyman like me could come to footage like that. Could the clips …

A grim MySQL reality (eller, Österbottningar i London)

I visited the London installment of our MySQL European Customer conference on Thursday. In a lecture hall of 250+ attendees I found an empty seat next to a man who turned out to be Patrik Pada who is the webmaster of HSS Media. Tick, tick, tick... [sound in my head thinking there is something familiar here...]

MySQL and Zmanda -- start to understand it

I'm trying to learn more about Zmanda and MySQL.  It's just ones of those topics that is on my list of things to Google.  At this point, I know that Zmanda can do backup and recovery for MySQL, but that is about it. I'd really like to get a better grasp of the technology and how it benefits a MySQL user.  Interestingly enough, over the past week or so, I've found a few mentions of Zmanda in my inbox that might speed this learning process along.  So, I thought that I would share them with those people who find themselves in the same situation.

  • Whitepaper: Zmanda Recovery Manager
  • Webinar: The Essentials of MySQL Backup & Recovery : Zmanda Recovery Manager (ZRM) for MySQL on Thursday, November 06, 2008, 16:00 GMT, 17:00 CET …
