A couple of years ago, MySQL Connector/Net shipped with a feature that allowed the connector to automatically create a SSH “tunnel” to a remote MySQL host. This could be useful in that it allows a remote MySQL host to only run with a secure port and a local client could connect to a local port to access it. Starting with the 8.0.23 release, our provider for Entity Framework Core has a new name. The main goal is to keep support for the different versions of Microsoft Entity Framework Core and to ensure those versions remain tighly coupled with our releases. Also, this new naming is more specific regarding the purpose of the package. Hence the Data part of the name was removed.

Before:

Now:

    MySql.EntityFrameworkCore v8.0.x

Keeping an ongoing pace to support the latest technologies, we are pleased to announce the latest updates regarding MySQL Connector/NET and Entity Framework Core.

As you may know, Entity Framework Core 3.1 is the latest and long-term support (LTS) release, meaning that it will be supported for at least 3 years. It has a primary goal to polish the EF Core 3.0 version and reintroduces support for .NET Standard 2.0, so it will run on .NET Frameworks versions that support the standard. We are proud to announce that version 8.0.17 is introducing support for SSH tunneled connections through the classic MySQL protocol and X Protocol. SSH enables the creation of secure encrypted connections between the local and a remote computer allowing services or components to be accessed, MySQL Server in this case. With SSH tunneling, users can connect to a MySQL Server from behind a firewall when the server port is blocked. The server doesn’t require any additional configuration for this type of connection and continues to work as usual.
