Using JSON’s Arrays for MariaDB Dynamic Columns

The JSON format includes the concept of array. A JSON object cant contain an attribute of array type. We have seen that we can use the MariaDB CONNECT Storage Engine provided UDFs (user defined functions) to implement dynamic columns. Let us create a table with a text column containing a a JSON string and let ...continue reading "Using JSON’s Arrays for MariaDB Dynamic Columns"

MariaDB CONNECT Storage Engine replay & slides available

The slides and replay of yesterday’s webinar on the MariaDB CONNECT storage engine have just been posted. First I want to thank the numerous attendees. You have shown great interest on the parallel execution of query on distributed MySQL Servers. I agree this is cool. The ODBC capabilities seems also to generate interest. This make [...]

MariaDB CONNECT Storage Engine and parallelism

The CONNECT Storage engine implement the concept of a table made of multiple tables. These underlying tables can be distributed remotely. For example the underlying remote tables can be of ODBC or MySQL table type. this allows to execute distributed queries. What is nice is that we can execute this distributed query with parallelism.

InfiniDB column store moves to open source ! Congrats !

Like TokuDB, InfiniDB is now a fully open source server product. In the past infiniDB was “almost open source”. The open source version was an old release with no access to the advance functions like MPP multi-server execution. This is no more the case. With InfiniDB 4 the open source version is the latest release [...]

MySQL and Hadoop Integration - Unlocking New Insight

“Big Data” offers the potential for organizations to revolutionize their operations. With the volume of business data doubling every 1.2 years, analysts and business users are discovering very real benefits when integrating and analyzing data from multiple sources, enabling deeper insight into their customers, partners, and business processes.

As the world’s most popular open source database, and the most deployed database in the web and cloud, MySQL is a key component of many big data platforms, with Hadoop vendors estimating 80% of deployments are integrated with MySQL.

The new Guide to MySQL and Hadoop presents the tools enabling integration between the two data platforms, supporting the data lifecycle from acquisition and organisation to …

Getting the best of Clouds, Internet and BI

The internet really is full of stuff, and we are starting to fill the Clouds with all sorts of software that moves from the serverrooms and in to the clouds. One aspect here that is often missing is what a Cloud environment and the Internet in itself can add to what we already know and have. Or in other words, running in the cloud is not only about lowering costs, and if you look at it by lowering costs by running things in the cloud the same way you used to run it on your private server, then chances are you might not gain anything, running in a cloud is also about having distinct advantages not easily available somewhere else.

Christopher Ahlberg here at Recorded Future just blogged about another way of looking at it: What do we have access to on the internet that is not readily available in the Server room, and the answer is: data. A lot of data. For someone in the field of BI, not using Internet data, and sticking to traditional …

Intro to OLAP

This is the first of a series of posts about business intelligence tools, particularly OLAP (or online analytical processing) tools using MySQL and other free open source software. OLAP tools are a part of the larger topic of business intelligence, a topic that has not had a lot of coverage on MPB. Because of this, I am going to start out talking about these topics in general, rather than getting right to gritty details of their performance.

I plan on covering the following topics:

  1. Introduction to OLAP and business intelligence. (this post)
  2. Identifying the differences between a data warehouse, and a data mart.
  3. Introduction to MDX queries and the kind of SQL which a ROLAP tool must generate to answer those queries.
  4. Performance challenges …

Writing another book: Pentaho Kettle Solutions

Last year, at about this time of the year, I was well involved in the process of writing the book Pentaho Solutions: Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing with Pentaho and MySQL" for Wiley. To date, "Pentaho Solutions" is still the only all-round book on the open source Pentaho Business Intelligence suite.

It was an extremely interesting project to participate in, full of new experiences. Although the act of writing was time consuming and at times very trying for me as well as my family, it was completely worth it. I have none but happy memories of the collaboration with my full …
