MySQL Configuration

I’ve been using MySQL 8 on Linux for a couple years but the Linux repository version didn’t install the new MySQL Shell. So, I discovered the new MySQL Shell when I installed MySQL 8 (8.0.21) on Windows to teach my student how to use it to learn SQL commands. I encourage you to read the full MySQL Shell document.

The following is a tutorial to provision a student user and studentdb database in MySQL. It uses the MySQL Shell (mysqlsh) and stages for uploads of comma-separated values files.

After installing MySQL on the Windows 10 OS, open the Window OS Command Line Interface (CLI) shell by entering the following in the search field at the bottom left:

cmd

It launches a CLI interface to the Windows OS. The cmd (command) utility opens the CLI in the following …

MySQL File Privilege

While preparing a set of student instructions to create a MySQL 8 (8.0.21) Windows 10 instance I found an error with LOAD command and the --secure-file_priv variable set in the my.ini file. After granting the global FILE permission to the previously provisioned student user:

GRANT FILE ON *.* TO 'student'@'localhost';

Any attempt to run the following command failed:

LOAD DATA INFILE 'C:\ProgramData\MySQL\MySQL Server 8.0\Uploads\avenger.csv'
INTO TABLE avenger
FIELDS TERMINATED BY ','
ENCLOSED BY '"'
ESCAPED BY '\\'
LINES TERMINATED BY '\r\n';

and, raise this error message:

ERROR: 1290: The MySQL server is running with the --secure-file-priv option so it cannot execute this statement

The following covers my exploration to try and fix this error without removing a designated directory for secure file uploads. While MySQL 5.7 …

MySQL 5.6 Install Steps

My install instructions on the web site were old, somebody wanted me to publish another set of screen capture for the MySQL 5.6 install and configuration. This is it for Windows 7 using the downloadable MSI file.

Installation Steps

The installation from MySQL’s perspective is actually the installation and configuration of MySQL. For your convenience and reference, I’ve already installed the pre-requisites for MySQL. They’re:

  • Visual Studio Tools for Office 20120 Runtime
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile
  • Microsoft Excel 2007 or greater
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 32-bit runtime
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile

Below are the installation steps after you download the current release .msi file. …

Sure-fire MySQL Install on Windows

Due to firewalls, virus scans, corporate security restrictions, or just plain bad luck; there are times when MySQL just won’t install on a specific Windows server.  Here’s a sure-fire install method.   Relax, I won’t have you run the msi installer again.

The first step is to remove directories from your previous install attempts.  Uninstall from the control panel.  Manually, rename or delete “C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.1″.  Next, delete (or rename) the data directory.  Warning! If you have previously entered data into MySQL, deleting the data directory will delete data.  The directory is located at “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.1\data”.   You may need to unhide the data directory.

Let’s get started.

#1.   …
