Submissions at Percona Live Santa Clara 2014 and Lightning talks

The call for participation at Percona Live MySQL Conference and Expo 2014 is now closed. There have been more than 320 submissions, and this will keep the review committee busy for a while.

One important point for everyone who has submitted: if you have submitted a proposal but haven’t included a bio in your account, do it now. If you don’t, your chances of being taken seriously are greatly reduced. To add a bio, go to your account page and fill in the Biography field. Including a picture is not mandatory, but it will be definitely appreciated.

Although the CfP is closed for tutorials and regular sessions, your chances of becoming a celebrity are not over yet. The CfP is still …

Call for papers (with lightning talks): Percona Live MySQL Conference 2014

The call for participation for Percona Live MySQL Conference 2014 is still open. As part of the review committee, I will be looking at the proposals, and I hope to see many interesting ones.

There is a novelty in the submission form. In addition to tutorials and regular sessions, now you can submit proposals for lightning talks, to which I am particularly interested, as I have organized the lightning talks in the past two editions, and I am in charge to continue the tradition for the next one.

If you want to be a speaker at the conference, here are some tips to get your proposal accepted:

  • Propose a topic that you know well;
  • Take some time to write a well thought and meaningful proposal: nothing gets me faster to the rejection button than statements like “I want to talk about X, I will …

Coding Serbia: iOS for Java Devs

At the first ever CodingSerbia conference in Novi Sad, Serbia, I did an introductory talk about how iOS development works in general, with a focus on Java developers who did not have any experience with either the tools, frameworks or even Objective-C as a language.

The slides can be viewed here:

Hong Kong (OpenStack Summit)

I’ll be in Hong Kong for the upcoming OpenStack Summit Nov 5-8. I’d be thrilled to talk database things with others present, especially around Trove DBaaS (DataBase as a Service) and high availability MySQL for OpenStack deployments.

I was last in Hong Kong in 2010 when I worked for Rackspace. The closest office to me was in Hong Kong so that’s where I did my HR onboarding training. I remember telling friends on the Sunday night before leaving for Hong Kong that I may be able to make dinner later in the week purely depending on if somebody got back to me on if I was going to Hong Kong that week. I was, and I went. I took some photos while there.

Walking from the hotel where we were staying to the Rackspace office could be done pretty much entirely through buildings without going outside. There were bits of art around too, which is just kind of awesome – I’m …

MySQL Connect presentations on MySQL Fabric

MySQL Connect Conference was a great success and I am really happy for being
able to attend it this year. Oracle showed interesting improvements and
exciting features in the upcoming MySQL 5.7 and released a very early alpha
version of MySQL Fabric which is a framework for managing farms of MySQL
servers.

You can find the presentations about MySQL Fabric on SlideShare:

. MySQL Sharding: Tools and Best Practices for Horizontal Scaling
. MySQL High Availability: Managing Farms of Distributed Servers

If you haven't watched yet Edward Screven and Tomas Ulin keynote on “The State
of the Dolphin”, please, click on the following …

Speaking at the MySQL NoSQL & Cloud Conference & Expo in Buenos Aires

I am on my way to Argentina, where I will be speaking at the MySQL NoSQL & Cloud Conference & Expo.

I have two talks: one on my pet project MySQL Sandbox and one on replication between MySQL and MongoDB (using another project dear to me, Tungsten Replicator.

It’s my first visit to Argentina and I will try to look around a bit before the conference. And I look forward to see many ex colleagues and well known speakers at the conference. The lineup includes speakers from Percona, EffectiveMySQL, PalominoDB, MariaDB, SkySQL, Tokutek, and OpenStack.

I am looking forward to this trip. My presentation on MongoDB replication is a first for me, and I am always pleased when I can break new ground. I have the feeling that the networking is …

Code of Conduct: It’s a Misnomer

For me, a Code of Conduct is not actually guidelines for how to act. For me, a Code of Conduct is what to do if there is a problem with someones conduct. When I get on a plane, I am told what to do in case of emergency here are the exits, heres how to use your life jacket and oxygen mask. I am not told every little thing that could be an emergency I believe that would be a waste of time and invariably something would be left out.

Similarly, for conferences, listing out all the behaviors that might be problematic is a waste of time, and invariably, behaviors are left out. In my opinion, that is a waste of time. What is NOT a waste of time is giving out the information of what to do in case of emergency.

At the MySQL Connect website, under the Plan tab, is a link to the Oracle …
