MySQL Developers Room at FOSDEM 2010

I am in Brussels, waiting to attend FOSDEM 2010, one of the biggest open source gatherings in Europe, taking place this weekend in Brussels.
On Sunday, there is a Developers Room for MySQL and Friends, with 14 talks from open source professionals coming from Europe and North America.

The novelty of this round of talks is that thy will be 20 minutes long, rather than 1 hour. This will force all presenters to be more cautious about their timing, and to concentrate their talks on the essential. Even the experienced ones, who have given the same talk several times, will have to make an effort to come to the …

Relax! A Failure is NOT an Emergency - a talk in Melbourne

While I'm in Melbourne in a few weeks for training I'm once again visiting my friends at Linux Users of Victoria (LUV). It's been a while since my schedule coincided with their meeting schedule!

I've been invited to do one of the talks (Sandrine Balbo doing the other), and my topic is "Relax! A Failure is NOT an Emergency." which is although somewhat MySQL-related not actually MySQL-specific.

This will be on Tuesday April 7th. You can find more detailed description and location/time info in the LUV announcement.

Los Angeles MySQL meetup with Facebook DBA, Chris Schneider

South Californians, mark your calendars! On February 24th at 7,30pm the Los Angeles Meetup Group will host Chris Schneider, Facebook DBA, who will talk about "Scaling MySQL".

Now, if I talk about scaling MySQL, I will refer to personal experience in my consulting career, when 10 million people connected all at once to my customer's web site. You may be interested in the story or simply yawn. But when a Facebook DBA talks to you about scaling, 10 million connection is low traffic, and scaling takes a completely different meaning.

In this meetup, Chris will talk about different methodologies used at Facebook to deal with their scaling issues. If you are near Los Angeles on February 24th, you don't want to miss this …

Webinar “Bau sicherer LAMP Anwendungen”

Last week I gave my first webinar for MySQL titled “Bau sicherer LAMP Anwendungen”. The webinar, which was a cooperation between MySQL and my company SektionEins, was held in german, covered SQL-Malware, SQL-Injection, safe programming and some tools to detect and block SQL-Injection attacks.

The recording of this webinar is now available on the MySQL site.

For those that only want to see my slides they are available on the MySQL site after registration or here.

Because it was a german webinar the recording and slides are in german, too.

Hamburg PHP UG / Lehmanns

Last night I spoke at Lehmanns book store in Hamburg on the new ext/mysqli extension in PHP 5. The talk was a good deal of fun and provided a nice warm up for the upcoming three hour tutorial that Georg and I will give at ApacheCon EU. (Additionally, some sharp audience members caught errors on my slides! :)

Thanks to everyone who attended (about 50-60 people, even though the weather in Hamburg was absolutely fantastic and the talk was in English, rather than German.)

In particular, thanks to Ekkehard Doerre from coolscreen.de and Dirk Eckel from Lehmanns for coordinating the talk.

The setting for the talk - the Lehmanns in Hamburg near the …
