More MySQL Advice (Update)

In my last post, I forgot to mention another MySQL related Sun Blueprints™ that was recently published: MySQL Guide for Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage Systems by Bill Aiken and Krishnan Shankar.  MySQL and the Sun Storage 7000 is a great marriage because it delivers good performance, low cost, combined with ease of management.   Configuring system I/O can be a complex and frustrating task even for experienced systems administrators.   Start ups and smaller companies using MySQL typically just don't have the skill or time to tune the I/O interface of their database.   Here the …

Taxi rides and packed rooms at Athens Open Source Conference

I arrived in Athens shortly before midnight. An unusual sight. Most of the taxi drivers in the queue are female. My driver is a middle aged woman wearing a torn leather jacket and with no understanding of English beyond numbers. She said "yes. Liberian hotel", and she adds the name of a mysterious location that I don't understand. I show her the hotel name and address, written in both Latin and Greek alphabet. "Yes. Iberian hotel. I know where." "Not Iberian - I say patiently, pointing at the hotel name on the paper - Imperial.
She says yes, and off we go.
After a minute she fishes a cell phone from her jacket, and asks something. It's a flurry of incomprehensible Greek, but the hotel name I hear very clearly "yadda yadda yadda Liberia hotel yadda yadda". I lean forward and I repeat "Not Liberia. Imperial". "yes, she says. Iberia".
I tell her to stop the taxi. I show her again the name of the hotel, "Imperial," and the place where …

Sun's Network Innovations (3 of 4)

As I referenced in my prior entry, I'm reviewing Sun's three major strategic imperatives, and our progress going in to next fiscal year. Our strategic imperatives, in order, are:

1. Technology Adoption
2. Commercial Innovation
3. Efficiently Connecting 1. and 2.

This entry focuses on the second, Commercial Innovation, and reviews our core revenue products, services and strategies.

By now, you understand Sun's approach to growing the market - driving adoption of key technologies drives Sun's addressable market. Once you're using one of our fundamental technologies, Sun's innovations focused on those technologies are relevant to you. The beauty of free distribution is you don't have to pick customers, they pick you.

Three very …

MySQL University: MySQL and ZFS

This Thursday (March 12th, 14:00 UTC), Martin MC Brown will give a MySQL University session on MySQL and ZFS. MC works on the MySQL Documentation Team and has been involved with quite a few Solaris things, for example porting MySQL to openSolaris. MC has recently given MySQL University talks on developing MySQL on Solaris and about using DTrace with MySQL.

For MySQL University sessions, point your browser to this page. You need a browser with a working Flash plugin. You may register for a Dimdim account, but you don't …

A deceiving error message while setting a replication slave

I was setting up a slave manually for a quick-and-dirty experiment, when I found this one:

mysql %gt; slave start;
ERROR 1200 (HY000): The server is not configured as slave; fix in config file or with CHANGE MASTER TO

Hmm... I did the CHANGE MASTER TO already, but just for the sake of it, let's do it again.

mysql %gt; change master to master_host='127.0.0.1', master_port=22346,
master_user='msandbox', master_password='msandbox',
master_log_file='mysql-bin.000002', master_log_pos=106;
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec)

mysql %gt; slave start;
ERROR 1200 (HY000): The server is not configured as slave; fix in config file or with CHANGE MASTER TO

Again! Why is it asking to execute CHANGE MASTER TO, which has been accepted right now?

Then it came to me. Because I did a manual configuration, and I …

Technology Adoption (2 of 4)

As I referenced in my prior entry, I'm reviewing Sun's three major strategic imperatives, and our progress going in to next fiscal year. Our strategic imperatives, in order, are:

1. Technology Adoption
2. Commercial Innovation
3. Efficiently Connecting 1. and 2.

This entry focuses on the first, Technology Adoption. Adoption is a non-economic phenomena, no money is spent, only time - yet it has extreme financial consequences. Let me give you an example.

I was with a big customer of ours last year, and reading through my account briefing before the meeting, I knew we were doing well. An analysis of their download activity showed they were heavy users of Solaris and OpenSolaris, and they had a large internal community of MySQL users, as well. In the meeting, their CIO said "we love where Solaris is headed." I …

BoFs welcome at the MySQL Users Conference and Expo 2009

As usual, the MySQL Users Conference and Expo includes Birds of a Feather (BoF) sessions.

For the uninitiated, a BoF is an informal discussion group about a common topic. There is no registration and no fee for a BoF. You can organize one even if you don't plan to attend the main event. If your BoF is accepted and scheduled, you can organize it as you like. You won't get a free pass for a BoF, though.

We provide the rooms. You bring in the ideas. Submit a BoF proposal!
