MySQL Conference: Join us at the BoF about MySQL Code Contributions and the MySQL Development Cycle tonight at 7:30pm in Ballroom A

The MySQL Conference & Expo 2009 in Santa Clara is now in full swing and Karen Padir just gave the opening keynote, talking about Sun's continued and improved commitment to Open Source and the upcoming MySQL products like the MySQL 5.4 performance release or MySQL Cluster 7.0. One of the activities that she mentioned in her keynote is our ongoing activity to improve the acceptance and incorporation of patches contributed by the community.

We've scheduled a BoF about this topic …

Karen’s Commitments to the MySQL Community

A new start always provides an opportunity to reassess your way of doing things:

  • “Am I doing the right things with my life?”
  • “Which habits could I change — in order to be a better neighbour?”

Since Karen Tegan Padir took over the MySQL product from Mårten Mickos, we at Sun have taken a thorough look in the mirror.  The result of this introspection allows us to publish our conclusions and new community commitments this week in conjunction with the MySQL Conference & Expo in Santa Clara.

For those who don’t yet know Karen, let me state a few facts:

  • Karen is VP of Sun’s newly-founded MySQL & Software Infrastructure group
  • She describes herself as a geek and a straight-shooter, and I can attest to both
  • She was …

Meet the faces of Percona this week in Santa Clara

This year we’ve assembled a team of seven Perconian representatives for the MySQL Conference & Expo/Percona Performance Conference. If you like a particular blog post we’ve written over the last year, have any other feedback, or just want to say hello - we’d like to meet you!

From left to right; Morgan, Ewen, Baron, Vadim, Peter, Tom, Ryan.

We’ll be at the Percona Performance Conference (Wed & Thur), at the Percona booth inside the exhibition hall (Tue & Wed), and at the Maatkit booth in the dot-org pavilion.   Feel free to bring your technical questions to booth #528, where a consultant will be available.   We’ll try our best to help you for the price of a free beer!

Made it to Santa Clara, ready for the MySQL Conference!

Hyatt Regency, Santa Clara
Originally uploaded by Lenz Grimmer

After a long and uneventful flight from HAM to SFO via FRA, I arrived safely in Santa Clara yesterday. Today we spent the day in San Francisco, for some sightseeing (Downtown, Chinatown, Pier 39 and Fishermen's Wharf) and a bit of shopping. It was a very nice and sunny day, the sunlight helped a lot with getting over the jetlag for a while.

But now I'm pretty tired - I look forward to meeting friends, colleagues and members of our community at the …

Community Keynote at the MySQL Conference

I am thrilled to announce that this year’s MySQL Conference will feature a Community Keynote. This is a keynote speech delivered by a community member (not a Sun employee!) about topics relevant to us.

I am delivering this year’s keynote, entitled “How to be a MySQL Superhero” on Wednesday, April 22nd at 9:45 am Pacific. Details are at http://www.mysqlconf.com/mysql2009/public/schedule/detail/9098. This is a great indication that Sun and O’Reilly are taking community very seriously, and want to make sure that our voices are heard — literally.

I hope that this can be an annual featured keynote, like the “State of the Dolphin.” The thriving community is one of the reasons MySQL is the world’s most popular database.

Zimbra Collaboration Suite 6.0 Beta (Codename: Guns N’ Roses)

Few things get our community excited like a major release version of the Zimbra Collaboration Suite. Today marks availability of the first GnR preview: ZCS 6.0 Beta 1 Open Source Edition. Admins and developers can find it over on the downloads page, for the less technically inclined we’ll also have a new hosted demo up shortly.

Some feature highlights:

» A new horizontal ‘three panel’ view with the message on the right.

» There are now tabs for individual messages as well as the compose page.

» Document & Briefcase access from the standard HTML client.

» Share management & discovery UI that lets you see all shares …

MySQL Conference Notes

MySQL Conference 2009 is coming around the corner, next week, in Santa Clara.

You may want to delve into the notes, as a fast way to learn about the happenings.

If you want to become an active code contributor to MySQL, the hackfest by Mark Callaghan seems interesting, and you should probably also start here and here

There will also be a special BoF geared to community contributors. (I still haven't been able to find out about the exact timing of this but you should be …
