I’ve recently had the pleasure of reading “Python Testing: An easy and convenient approach to testing your python projects” from Packt Publishing. It’s been a quick read but a solid set of instructions on the different methods for the subject.

The book starts out very quickly with details about the various methods that are available, the means of automation for testing, and of course the environment you’d want to be in for working on the subjects that the book covers. It then, in the second chapter, moves into the guts of testing by describing the basics of doctest via syntax and some simple examples, and then moves on to a real world example via the AVL tree. Just one week after the latest Beta we are now releasing the next followup build WB 5.2.19 that again fixes a number of issues found in the last Betas. Since beta 8 we were able to close another 32 bugs (P1 – 2, P2 – 4 , P3 – 26).

I caught some of the keynotes and discussion at the Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit today, and was particularly interested in the panel discussion on open source and cloud computing. While we are used to hearing and talking about how important open source software is to cloud computing (open source giving to cloud computing), moderator John Mark Walker posed the question of whether cloud computing gives back? The discussion also rightfully focused on openness in cloud computing, how open source might or might not translate to cloud openness and the importance of data to be open as well.

We’re proud to announce Beta 8 of MySQL Workbench 5.2.
Since beta 7 we have fixed additional bugs as well as put in some improvements requested by the community so we decided to pack up another release for you to check out. This Beta includes fixes for 35 bugs (P1 – 1, P2 – 10 , P3 – 24)

Also we have added new HUD-style (FADE IN) UI elements to show wait-times while WB is setting up connections (currentlz windows only, will be added to linux/mac in next release).

Additionally we have added Connection-/Instance-sorting, now you can go to the connection/instance manager and sort using up/down buttons.

Today we have something to celebrate - the MySQL 5.5.4 was announced! And a huge number of performance improvement made in this version make me very happy :-))

I've got an immense pleasure to participate in this story and seek for the most optimal solutions together with all these talented engineers from MySQL/Sun/InnoDB/Oracle teams (and in few months all Oracle :-)) - and I think it was a huge step ahead to see how well we may all work together :-))

And now I'm happy to share with you my results obtained with MySQL 5.5.4 on dbSTRESS benchmark. All tests were executed on the 32cores Intel server running Fedora 10 and having 128GB RAM and absolutely fast internal SSD drives (and if from the memory I've used only 16GB for the buffer pools, the SSD drives helped a lot to reduce any dependency on the I/O activity).

Test scenario :
