Operating a Drupal Site behind a Reverse Proxy Server (Apache)

It's often not desirable to expose your Drupal server directly to the end users. This document describes how to “hide” a Drupal server behind a reverse proxy server. This is typically done for a number of reasons:

  • protection: the topology of the server, the database server can be hidden from the front end

  • caching: The proxy server take away load from the backend system through caching

  • flexibility: the topology behind the reverse proxy can be changed more easily

  • scalability: the proxy server can be used for future load balancing

The technical problem isn't new. It has been solved before. I had however problems finding a solution in a single document.

The configuration is basically a platform neutral AMP stack …

Aspects and benefits of distributed version control systems (DVCS)

This blog post is a by-product of my preparation work for an upcoming talk titled "Why you should be using a distributed version control system (DVCS) for your project" at SAPO Codebits in Lisbon (December 3-5, 2009). Publishing these thoughts prior to the conference serves two purposes: getting some peer review on my findings and acting as a teaser for the actual talk. So please let me know — did I cover the relevant aspects or did I miss anything? What's your take on DVCS vs. the centralized approach? Why do you prefer one over the other? I'm looking forward to your comments!

Even though there are several distributed alternatives available for some years now (with Bazaar, git and …

Some friendly advice for bootstrapping your OSS project

So you're a small startup company, ready to go live with your product, which you intend to distribute under an Open Source License. Congratulations, you made a wise decision! Your developers have been hacking away frantically, getting the code in good shape for the initial launch. Now it's time to look into what else needs to be built and setup, so you're ready to welcome the first members of your new community and to ensure they are coming back!

Keep the following saying in mind, which especially holds true in the Open Source world: "You never get a second chance to make a first impression!". While the most important thing is of course to have a compelling and useful product, this blog post is an attempt to highlight some other aspects about community building and providing the adequate infrastructure. This insight is based on my own experiences and my …

A DTrace Quick Start Guide

Alta Elsta & I just completed the DTrace Quick Start Guide: Observing Native and Web Applications in Production mini-book. If you need a hardcopy let me know but if you are like me and would love to save a few trees you can click on the picture below to download the pdf version.

We talk about why DTrace is so different from any observation tools you may have seen. We cover basic DTrace concepts and some details on writing d-scripts. We also have a lot of sample scripts. Sections on using DTrace to observe MySQL and Drupal are included.

The examples from the book have also been added to a wiki page for easier copy & paste.

Thoughts on the Whitehouse.gov switch to Drupal

Yesterday, the new media team at the White House announced via the Associated Press that whitehouse.gov is now running on Drupal, the open source content management system. That Drupal implementation is in turn running on a Red Hat Linux system with Apache, MySQL and the rest of the LAMP stack. Apache Solr is the new White House search engine.

This move is obviously a big win for open source. As John Scott of Open Source for America (a group advocating open source adoption by government, to which I am an advisor) noted in an email to me: "This is great news not only for the use of open source software, but the validation of the …

Tag1 Now Hiring Interns

At the beginning of 2009, I was hired by Tag1 Consulting as Jeremy Andrews' full time partner. A decidedly questionable decision on his part, but a great change for me! I used to work at the Open Source Lab at Oregon State University and I am currently the sysadmin for drupal.org. Working at the OSL and drupal.org spoiled me, I'll be completely honest about that. I got used to working with interesting new technologies and consistently pushing the limits of my knowledge.

MySQL > YourSQL

Since I started doing the occasional consulting job for Open Query, I've seen a lot of MySQL servers that have been installed once and then forgotten about. This gave me the idea to do a short presentation about some basic MySQL server configuration. The first go was at DrupalCampMelbourne and I recently tried (and failed) to cram it into a three minute lightning talk slot at the LUV September meeting.

The title of the talk is (now) MySQL > YourSQL. I chose this not because I think that MySQL is better than the $other_database you use or because I may or may not run a newer version of MySQL on better hardware, but because I use InnoDB and …

"Idle"

For those who wonder why my blogging is so low these days (apart from today) .. I`m actually writing more Lines of Code than Blog Entries the last couple of weeks:)

And when I`m not writing code I`m reading :) Either proofreading an upcoming book on Zabbix or reading some of the other books Packt sent me.

Next to that I`m busy preparing my T-Dose presentation

Oh and did I mention a 40 something questions questionnaire about some merger ?
