Jemalloc install & config for MySQL

So, we’ve heard that jemalloc is better than malloc for MySQL usage, and in fact, certain versions / forks of mysql already include this, eg. Percona Server (https://github.com/percona/jemalloc).

But, how can I install and configure my system to use it?

Here’s a quick push in the, hopefully, right direction.

First things first, what is “jemalloc” and how does it affect my system? I think it’s quite well explained here: https://www.percona.com/blog/impact-of-memory-allocators-on-mysql-performance/ albeit an old article.

The right place to get the latest …

Platform End of Life (EOL) Announcement for RHEL 5 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Upstream platform vendors have announced the general end of life (EOL) for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL 5) and its derivatives, as well as Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. With this announcement comes some implications to support for Percona software running on these operating systems.

RHEL 5 was EOL as of March 31st, 2017 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS was end of life as of April 28th, 2017. Pursuant to our end of life policies, we are announcing that these EOLs will go into effect for Percona software on August 1st, 2017. As of this date, we will no longer be producing new packages, binary builds, hotfixes, or bug fixes for Percona software on these platforms.

We …

Docker MySQL Replication 101

In this blog post, we’ll discuss some of the basics regarding Docker MySQL replication. Docker has gained widespread popularity in recent years as a lightweight alternative to virtualization. It is ideal for building virtual development and testing environments. The solution is flexible and seamlessly integrates with popular CI tools.

This post walks through the setup of MySQL replication with Docker using Percona Server 5.6 images. To keep things simple we’ll configure a pair of instances and override only the most important variables for replication. You can add whatever other variables you want to override in the configuration files for each instance.

Note: the configuration described here is suitable for development or testing. We’ve also used the …

How to install MySQL 5.6 on CentOS 7

A bit of history

The latest version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, one of the most popular and respected Linux distributions in the server market, was released in June 2014, followed by CentOS 7 and Oracle Linux releases in July of the same year.

There are very interesting changes for database administrators in these new releases, among which I would like to highlight the fact that installer now chooses XFS as its filesystem by default, which substitutes ext4 as the preferred format for local data storage. Red …

How to install Phalcon PHP framework in Ubuntu linux?

Well, we have all heard about the fastest php framework out there. But how do we install it in a Ubuntu Linux machine.

Default process for any linux setup.

Steps:

1. First, we need  a few packages previously installed. To install them, issue the distro specific command in your linux terminal.

For Ubuntu:

sudo apt-get install php5-dev php5-mysql gcc libpcre3-dev

For Fedora:

sudo yum install php-devel php-mysqlnd gcc libtool

For RHEL:

sudo yum install php-devel php-mysql gcc libtool

For Suse:

yast2 -i php5-pear php5-devel php5-mysql gcc

Basically, here we are installing the dev tools we require to compile and setup the Phalcon extension.

2. Get the Phalcon build using git

git …

Connect MySQL to sqlite3 database or to flat txt file via CONNECT engine of MariaDB 10.0.7 on Fedora/CentOS

You might don’t know that, but the MariaDB engines are amazing ..
More info you can find here:
https://mariadb.com/kb/en/mariadb-storage-engines/

I was teased by CONNECT engine : https://mariadb.com/kb/en/connect/

What is good for ? Well, I leave that to your imagination, as you could have MariaDB as a spider connected and managing InnoDB tables, flat files, MS ACCESS databases, MS Excel files … all that in same time.
So how to use it?
By the documentation :
1. https://mariadb.com/kb/en/loading-the-connect-handler/
check if there is CONNECT already installed, if not, install it:

mysql root@mariadb-10.0.7:[Wed Jan 29 09:36:14 2014][(none)]> show …

MariaDB & distributions update, Dec 2013

A few things to note recently, amongst MariaDB in distributions.

  1. Ubuntu keeps MySQL 5.5 despite MariaDB’s success. There’s a lot of reasons for this, but remember the key takeaway here is MySQL 5.5 & the fact that MariaDB wasn’t even in Debian yet when the decision was made.
  2. MariaDB is now inside of Debian/sid – check out the packages.
  3. RHEL 7 comes with MariaDB 5.5 as a default; this is a good thing.

Now, from a distribution standpoint, we’re looking at starting to ship 10.0 …
