Tungsten Clustering 6.0 and Tungsten Replicator 6.0 are now available!

Continuent is very pleased and excited to announce that the new Tungsten Clustering 6.0 and Tungsten Replicator 6.0 are now available for download by our customers. The 6.0 release is the culmination of over a years work within our clustering product in order to improve the functionality and manageability of what we now call our ‘Multimaster Clustering’ solution. This is the replacement for what we called the multi-site, multi-master (MSMM) clustering functionality in earlier releases. The multimaster clustering allows for multiple clusters, in multiple locations, to be linked together into a single composite cluster. Because it’s a composite cluster, you gain all of the functionality that’s already available in a cluster, such as:

  • High availability
  • Failover
  • Automated recovery
  • Read-write split
  • Maintenance without downtime

But it’s now applied to the …

MySQL NDB Cluster Backups

Today – 31 March – is world backup day, so I thought I would write a little about backups in MySQL NDB Cluster.

Just because NDB Cluster offers built-in redundancy and high availability does not mean backups are not important. They are – as ever and as for everything in software. The redundancy does not protect against user errors (anyone ever executed DROP TABLE or DROP SCHEMA by accident?) neither does it protect against a natural disaster, fire, or another disaster hitting the data center. Similar with high availability.

In short, if the data is in any way remotely important for you, you ensure you have a backup. Furthermore, a backup is not worth any more than your ability to restore it. If …

What is MySQL NDB Cluster?

I have had the opportunity to write a blog for Apress with a brief introduction to MySQL NDB Cluster. The blog gives a brief overview of the history and why you should consider it. The architecture is described before some key characteristics are discussed.

If you are interested, the blog can be found at https://www.apress.com/us/blog/all-blog-posts/what-is-mysql-ndb-cluster/15454530.

Happy reading.

MySQL Cluster 7.6 includes new Cluster Configurator

After dealing with Windows performance, I switched to MySQL Cluster Configurator (MCC for short) project. This was quite a change for me having to deal with Python back-end and JavaScript front-end, languages I was not so familiar with.

For the history of the project, please refer to Andrew's blog post for I will concentrate on changes made in new version.

There are many exciting new features in MySQL Cluster 7.6.4DMR including new MCC. To download MySQL Cluster 7.6.4DMR, please go to Development Releases tab. To see what's new in 7.6.4DMR, please follow this link.

MySQL Cluster Manager 1.4.5 released!

MySQL Cluster Manager 1.4.5 is now available for download from My Oracle Support.

Overview
MCM 1.4.5 contains further stability and usability improvements of MySQL Cluster Manager.

The 1.4.5 release bundles MySQL Cluster 7.5.9. However, since MySQL Cluster 7.5.7, system tables contain sufficient information for MCM to properly support rolling reconfigurations when ndb_cluster_connection_pool is enabled for mysqlds.…

Two New MySQL Books!

There are two new MySQL books both from Apress Press. One is an in depth master course on the subject and the other is a quick introduction.

ProMySQL NDB Cluster is subtitled Master the MySQL Cluster Lifecycle and at nearly 700 pages it is vital resource to anyone that runs or is thinking about running NDB Cluster. The authors, Jesper Wisborg Krogh and Mikiya Okuno, have distilled their vast knowledge of this difficult subject in a detail packed but easily readable book.  MySQL Cluster is much more complex in many areas than a regular MySQL server and here you will find all those details. If you run MySQL NDB Cluster then you need this book. The partitioning information in chapter 2 is worth the price of the book alone.  I am only a third of the way …

Taming a ‘wild’ NDB 7.3 with Cluster Manager 1.4.3 & direct upgrade to 7.5.

Well, since working with outdated clusters and upgrade paths that quickly become obsolete, as in my last post, Migrating/importing NDB to Cluster Manager w/ version upgrade. , I wanted to share that we can also use Cluster Manager, mcm, to upgrade NDB Cluster from 7.3 directly to 7.5. So we can start using the mcm new features like autotune that help guide us towards some Cluster tuning, or 7.5 new features like READ_BACKUP or FULLY_REPLICATED tables. …
